WATER POLO

The new year marks the start of the new North Idaho Water Polo (NIWP) club.

Head coach Mark Collingham, in partnership with the Coeur d’Alene Salvation Army Kroc Center, established the first water polo team in North Idaho in 2012. As of Jan. 1, NIWP is now an independent club based at the Kroc Center in Coeur d’ Alene.

Up through last year, the club was sponsored by the Kroc Center but with continued growth the club has mutually decided with the Kroc Center to become an independent organization. The club will retain its coaches and practice facility. The high school team has won the Idaho state championship for 10 years running.

The club participates in a number of tournaments throughout the year — in addition to the Idaho water polo high school season, the club also competes in USAWP-sanctioned tournaments in Oregon and Washington and also plays against local college programs including Gonzaga, Idaho, Central Washington and Boise State.

The club also recently competed in the largest water polo tournament in the United States — the National Junior Olympic Water Polo Championship in Dallas, Texas — where the high school girls team placed fourth overall and boys finished 14th out of approximately 30 teams in their respective divisions.

The Coeur d’Alene area has a variety of opportunities in water polo for different age levels. In addition to the NIWP high school and Masters programs, the Salvation Army Kroc Center separately offers Junior (ages 7-10) and Developmental (ages 11-14) water polo classes.

More information on the NIWP club can be found at northidahowaterpolo.org for the high school/Masters programs and at kroccda.org/kroc-cda/waterpolo/ for the Kroc Center Junior and Development classes.
