| January 10, 2024 1:00 AM

Renate Kljavin, born Sept. 14, 1933, in Kinberg, Austria, passed away Dec. 6, 2023, surrounded by her family. Renate had a life filled with many adventures.

Renate spent her childhood in Ratten, Austria. She lived there during WWII, which left her with many stories of the war that shaped her young childhood. In 1951, Renate moved to Calgary, where she went to school to be an X-ray technician and began her career there. Renate’s parents moved to Guam in 1954, and she joined them there. She loved the islands, and there, she met Ivar Kljavin, who was stationed there with the U.S. Air Force and was married Dec. 15, 1954.

Shortly after getting married, they moved to Texas, where Ivar completed his four-year commitment in 1956, and Renate went to work as a supervisor at a local department store.

Renate and Ivar then moved back to Long Island, where they welcomed their son, Ivar Kljavin Jr. In 1962, the family moved to Boise, Idaho, and together they purchased their first business, Carbonic Gas & Dry Ice.

In 1972, Ivar, Renate, Ivar Jr., and their young daughter, Monica, purchased the Pines Resort in Coeur d’Alene. The family ran the business, making lasting friends with customers, employees, and local business owners. In 2004, they sold the resort and retired in Coeur d’Alene.

Over the years, Renate loved boating, snow skiing, dining out and spending time with her family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and was loved by many.

Renate is survived by her son, Ivar Jr.; her daughter, Monica; and four grandchildren, Nicole, Marcus, Angelo and Katharina; and one great-grandchild, Charlotte.

Family and friends are welcome to celebrate her life March 9, 2024, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at The Coeur d’Alene Resort. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Hospice of North Idaho.
