STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: Riding high again ... Seguine rallies for third straight 5A title as Trojans, with three champions, finish second in 5A

| February 25, 2024 1:25 AM

POCATELLO — Trailing 5-1 in his finals match heading to the third period, Post Falls junior Rider Seguine knew he needed something special.

So, a two-time champion did what any well-trained wrestler might.

He got back on top.

Seguine scored a takedown, then a near fall, and beat Aulani Macias of Nampa 6-5 in the state 5A 120-pound final for his third straight state title on Saturday at the ICCU Dome (formerly Holt Arena).

“I wasn't really sure what had happened after that,” Seguine said. “I was just happy I was able to make something happy there.”

Seguine recently returned after suffering a broken hand during the Tri-State Invitational in December, missing the month of January.

“Just being able to have that opportunity to come back and wrestle was big motivation for me,” Seguine said. “It was kind of like when Jose (Laguna) broke his ankle at Tri-State last year and came back.”

“When Rider’s in good shape, he’s tough to beat,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “He just had to find a way to go up. He didn’t have this one in the bag by far, but it was pretty cool to see him come back and win that one.”

Post Falls senior Tyson Barnhart, who won a title as a freshman at 106 pounds, capped his high school career with a 9-2 win over Logan Shaver of Meridian in the 145-pound final.

“I’ve been putting in a lot of work over the summer,” said Barnhart, who was second at state as a junior and fourth as a sophomore. “I’ve been thinking about last year a lot, and just wanted to come and outwork everyone. I was really happy that all of that paid off.”

Barnhart beat Coeur d’Alene’s Colton Tucker by major decision in the semifinals.

“After all four years, I’ve never lost to a Coeur d’Alene kid,” Barnhart said.

“He’s just been really committed to the program for the last four years,” said Reardon, in his 15th season as coach. “When you’ve got a kid that’s committed and working hard each day, it’s really gratifying to see him pull that off.”

Post Falls junior Seth Martin avenged two previous losses this season to Nampa’s Jonathan Seamons to win the 170-pound title by a 3-2 decision.

“I had a lot of morning practices with my coaches and teammates trying to get better,” said Martin, who lost to Seamons at the Rollie Lane Invitational and River City Duals. “My mindset and preparation were a lot different this time. I’ve got a lot of praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

“To get that win was awesome for him,” Reardon said. “There was a takedown that was waved off, and a few other chaotic things and crazy happenings. But Seth kept his head the entire time.”

“It was hard to stay calm, but I was always ready to wrestle,” Martin said. “I knew I just had to keep wrestling until the end. In the end, I was very thankful for all the work my coaches have put in to help me.”

5A: Junior Trey Smith (second at 160), sophomore Damion Hamilton (second at 152), sophomore Gage Loftin (fourth at 98), freshman Matthew Hamilton (third at 106) and junior Kendall Sage (fourth at 195) also placed for Post Falls.

“After a slow start on Friday, the kids wrestled really well,” Reardon said. “They fought their guts out today. We knew they’d come out hungry today and they really got after it.”

Meridian won its fourth straight 5A title with 273.5 points, followed by Post Falls with 206.5 in second and Nampa in third with 178.

Post Falls has finished in the top three at state 13 straight years, including five state titles in a six-year stretch, the last coming in 2020. The Trojans were also second last season, after finishing third in 2021 and ’22.

Coeur d’Alene senior Gabe Grassel lost by technical fall to Meridian’s Hudson Rogers, an Oregon State commit, in the 182-pound final.

“Gabe had a really good weekend and last month of the season,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat, in his 23rd season as coach. “All of his matches were great. It wasn’t that he wrestled badly in the finals, but that kid (Rogers) is a great wrestler. Gabe had never been on the podium, and to make the finals was great to see.”

Other Coeur d’Alene placers were sophomore Rocco White (third at 98), sophomore Tanner George (fourth at 145), junior Will Rossi (fifth at 120) and sophomore Mason Rogers (fifth at 126).

Coeur d'Alene finished seventh. The top four teams receive trophies.

“We’re always striving to get trophies at state,” Moffat said. “We’ve got everyone back but two guys. We’re going to make a push this offseason and see what happens next year. We’ve got some work to do, but we’ll do it and get better from here.”

Juniors Garrett Leonard (third at 195) and Sebastian Mosman (fifth at 220) placed for Lake City.

4A: Before stepping into the circle for his first championship match, Lakeland freshman Carson Leonard turned to his dad — three-time state champion Clint Leonard — for some much needed guidance.

“He really just said one of the most important things to do was relax,” said Carson Leonard, who beat Rydge Vail from Bonneville of Idaho Falls 8-3 in the 113-pound final. “He told me I had the tools in the bag to get it done and to just relax. I just tried to treat it like any other match to be honest. It was just like winning any other tournament.”

“It’s tough being a freshman at your first state tournament,” said second-year Lakeland coach and former Hawks standout Will Edelblute. “He was laser focused and at the top of his game. It was just awesome to watch.”

Junior Carter Vanek (fourth at 285), freshman Zach Teal (fifth at 98) and junior Jaren Knopp (fifth at 120) placed for Lakeland, which finished tied for third with Blackfoot.

“It means a lot,” said Edelblute, whose team finished 18th at state last year. “The guys fought hard and a lot of teams were counting us out. We were confident and all we had to do was come and execute. We’ve got 14 of our 15 qualifiers back next year, so we’ll be going hunting for more than a third next year.

Sandpoint junior Jorden Tyler was runner-up at 195, and Bulldog senior Shane Sherrill was third at 138.

3A: Timberlake sophomore Wyatt Carey finished runner-up at 106 pounds, falling to Trevor Paynter of Homedale in the title match.

Other Timberlake placers were junior Jonathan Hansen (fourth at 170), sophomore Sawyer Huston (fifth at 98), freshman Jacob Rade (sixth at 113) and senior Luke Schell (fifth at 182).

Bonners Ferry freshman Taylor Dodd was fourth at 285.

Fruitland won its first team title since 2014, scoring a classification-record 318 points.

2A: Senior Kolter Wood (second at 132), sophomore Johnny Stovern (third at 98), freshman Colton Storey (third at 106), senior Jaeger Hall (fourth at 145), senior Ramsey Rainio (third at 170), freshman Kevin Watson (fifth at 98), sophomore Aiden Figueroa (sixth at 106), junior Ricky Haralson (fifth at 120) and sophomore Chase Scribner (sixth at 126) placed for Kellogg, which finished third in its second year since dropping to the 2A classification.

Kellogg matched its highest finish at state in program history. The Wildcats also took third in 3A in 2002.

St. Maries senior Scott Sotin was runner-up at 285.

St. Maries senior Trey Gibson, who has signed to play football at College of Idaho, was third at 195. Other Lumberjack placers were sophomore Aiden Yearout (third at 160) and freshman Kelby Harvey (fifth at 113).

Priest River junior Colm McLaimtaig beat Jack Eddins of Grace 8-7 for the 138-pound title.

Senior Caeden McLaimtaig (third at 152) and junior Caleb Grow (fifth at 220) also placed for Priest River.

Malad won its first team title since 2014, finishing with 183 points.

GIRLS

Coeur d’Alene senior Cara Brown finished runner-up at 145, falling to Boise’s Clare Waite in the championship match. Viking sophomore Brooklyn Anderson was third at 152.

“Cara just ran into a real physical girl that’s big and strong in the finals,” Moffat said. “But she did a good job all weekend, as did Brooklyn. They both competed hard the entire weekend.”

Senior Aubrey Wells (second at 165) and freshman Eva Willis (second at 185) helped lead Bonners Ferry to a third-place finish. Junior Sofia Brown (fifth at 132) and senior Savannah Rickter (sixth at 152) also placed for the Badgers.

Junior Alexxis Johnson was fourth at 120 for Lake City, and senior Madi Cook was sixth at 132.

Junior Emma Garman (sixth at 120) and sophomore Lilli Marti (sixth at 235) placed for Sandpoint.

Lakeland senior Annika Thompson was third at 165.

Thunder Ridge of Idaho Falls won the girls team title, finishing with 130.5 points. Eagle had won the past two team titles after the IHSAA began sanctioning the tournament in 2022.
