Sheriff's Office Notable Calls

| February 25, 2024 1:00 AM

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office published the following notable calls that occurred between Feb. 19 and Feb. 22. The sheriff’s office describes this information as preliminary and subject to revision as investigations continue.

Feb. 19 — A deputy made a traffic stop on Interstate 90 near Pleasant View. During the stop, a K-9 unit arrived and the K-9 alerted to illegal drugs in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle yielded a large amount of methamphetamine. The driver was arrested for possession of illegal drugs and the passenger was arrested for trafficking meth.

Feb. 20 — Deputies and detectives responded to the Beauty Creek area for an apparent suicide. The investigation is ongoing but the incident does not appear to be suspicious.

Feb. 20 — Deputies responded to the Athol area for a report of trespassing. This is an ongoing issue and the suspects were gone prior to laws arrival. Report was completed.

Feb. 20 — A deputy made a traffic stop on I-90 near Beck Road. The driver was determined to be on state probation and a K-9 alerted to illegal drugs in the vehicle. No drugs were found but there was paraphernalia throughout the car and on the subject’s person. They were arrested for the drug charges.

Feb. 21 — Deputies conducted a welfare check on a female who missed an appointment. When deputies arrived at the house, they noticed a person lying face down on the floor.  Entry was made into the residence and they located the female deceased. Nothing appeared to be suspicious.

Feb. 21 — A deputy handled a theft at Walgreens. It was reported a male subject loaded a shopping cart full of laundry detergent. The male was not located.

Feb. 21 — Deputies responded to a physical family dispute in the area of Brunner Road and Ramsey Road. The juvenile son ended up breaking a vehicle window and was arrested for malicious injury to property.

Feb. 21 — Several deputies responded to an address in Athol for what was originally reported as a kidnapping. Deputies arrived on scene and were talking to the reporting party who advised someone broke into his trailer and physically removed a female. Contact was made with the female and she advised she was fine and the incident was due to the reporting party finding her with another male. After it was all said and done, it was determined no crimes had been committed.

Feb. 21 — Deputies responded to a 911 hang-up at a residence on Riverview. The caller on the line advised he had an emergency and made some other odd comments. Deputies were able to make contact with the male via phone and during the conversation, the male continued to make odd statements and wanting to start a fire. The male claimed to be alone, however the deputy heard another voice on over the phone. Deputies arrived at the residence and as they approached, the male from an elevated position, made some aggressive statements and refused commands. The male then reached into his waistband and made a movement indicating he possibly had a weapon. Deputies took cover behind vehicles and eventually SWAT was called to the scene with armored vehicles to help get deputies out of the area.  During this time, deputies continued to verbally engage the male. However, he was uncooperative. Deputies were eventually able to get themselves and their vehicles out of the area. Deputies also confirmed the male was now alone, so a warrant was requested for aggravated assault and deputies cleared the scene as it was apparent the male was trying to do “suicide by cop.”

Feb. 22 — A deputy made a traffic stop at Hayden and Atlas. During the stop, it was determined the driver was under the influence. The driver was charged with DUI.
