STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: Those first-day nerves .... Tucker one of four in semis for Coeur d'Alene; Post Falls, second in 5A, has six in semis

| February 24, 2024 1:25 AM

POCATELLO — If you let the anxiousness of a state competition take control of you, sometimes it doesn’t go your way.

And while at first, it might have affected Coeur d’Alene junior Colton Tucker on Friday, it didn’t stop him from getting where he needed to be.

Tucker won two matches and advanced to the semifinals at 145 pounds for the Vikings, who were sixth after the first day of the state 5A wrestling tournament at the ICCU Dome — formerly Holt Arena.

“In his first match, for whatever reason, he was really nervous,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said of Tucker, who beat Lake City’s Alden Curto 5-4 in the first round before posting a 6-4 decision over Spencer Wilcox of Madison in the quarterfinals. “Against Madison, it was a tough match, but Colton just kept battling, which was good to see. He did a good job and wrestled really well in the quarterfinals.”

Tucker will face Post Falls senior Tyson Barnhart in the semifinals.

Post Falls, with six semifinalists, is second with 103.5 points. Three-time champion Meridian leads the tournament with 142.5 points and eight in the semis.

“It was an OK day,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “We had some good, some bad. More than anything, we came out a little flat, and that’s on me. Usually, we come out guns blazing, but our kids figured it out and got back to it.”

Gage Loftin beat Drake Jayne of Meridian in the quarterfinals at 98 for Post Falls.

“Drake beat Gage at Rollie Lane, so it was good to see him avenge that loss and cool for him to get to the semifinals,” Reardon said. “He’s peaking at the right time and was able to pull off a big win there.”

Junior Rider Seguine (120), a two-time state champion, recently returned after suffering a broken hand during the Tri-State Invitational at North Idaho College in December, and advanced to the semifinals.

“He’s really just hitting his stride now,” Reardon said. “He’s got enough competition under his belt now that he just took care of business.”

Damion Hamilton (152), Trey Smith (160) and Seth Martin (170) also advanced to the semis for Post Falls, seeking its first state title since 2020.

Will Rossi (120), Rocco White (98) and Gabe Grassel (182) advanced to the semis for Coeur d’Alene, which is in sixth place.

“We wrestled pretty well, but left some matches out there,” Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “There’s a few matches we wished we had back. This tournament plays so many mind games with some people. You just see a lot of weird stuff.”

Garrett Leonard (195) and Sebastian Mosman (220) advanced to the semis for Lake City, which is 14th.

In 4A, Carson Leonard (113) and Dylan Scott (220) advanced to the semifinals for Lakeland, which is fifth with 68.5 points.

Lakeland is seeking its first trophy at state since 2021.

Minico of Rupert, which has won the last three state titles, leads with 121 points.

In 3A, Timberlake’s Sawyer Huston (98), Wyatt Carey (106), Jonathan Hansen (170) and Luke Schell (182) advanced to the semifinals.

Timberlake is eighth with 69.5 points. Fruitland, seeking its first team title since 2014, leads with 180 points.

Kellogg, with six semifinals, is second in 2A with 86.5 points, trailing Malad with 90.

Johnny Stovern (98), Colton Storey (106), Ricky Haralson (120), Kolter Wood (132) and Jaeger Hall (145) advanced for the Wildcats, who are seeking their first trophy at state since 2002 (third in 3A),

Trey Gibson (195), Scott Sotin (285) and Aiden Yearout (160) advanced to the semis for St. Maries, which is seventh with 57.5 points.

In the girls tournament, Coeur d’Alene’s Cara Brown (145 pounds) and Brooklyn Anderson advanced to the semifinals, along with Lake City’s Madi Cook (132) and Alexxis Johnson (120), and Lakeland’s Annika Thompson (160).

“Both Cara and Brooklyn wrestled tough today,” Moffat said. “It was great to see them compete and wrestle well. They didn’t seem to get as nervous as the boys for whatever reason.”
