PRIMARY: Here’s where real blame belongs
A recent letter by Thomas Sanner begins with, “The secretary of state should reread his own mission statement. He probably would not have sided with the governor and ended Idaho’s presidential primary.”
This statement is false. The short response is that Dorothy Moon and newly minted IFF President Ron Nate ended Idaho’s Presidential Primary. The facts are in full view in the minutes and recording of the House State Affairs Committee meeting of March 30, 2023.
During the 2023 session, bills were advanced to consolidate elections. Idaho has held primary elections in May. Senate Bill 1186 would have included the March Republican Presidential Primary in the May elections. One reason to do so was to increase participation and to decrease confusion.
After opposition testimony by Dorothy Moon, Ron Nate and Rod Beck, S 1186 died in committee.
