Bat Masterson running for Kootenai County commissioner

COEUR d'ALENE — Bat Masterson, a lifelong resident of Kootenai County, has announced his candidacy for Kootenai County commissioner. 

"I am running for commissioner to ensure our county not only thrives but does so in a way that preserves our unique heritage and natural resources," Masterson said in a news release. "My life's work has been about service, and I see no greater opportunity to serve than by working for the people of Kootenai County."

Masterson served three tours overseas in the Vietnam War with the 3rd Marine Division, "demonstrating unparalleled commitment and bravery," a news release said.

Following his military service, Masterson worked in the local healthcare system.

His roles have included positions in the Emergency Department at Kootenai Medical Center (today Kootenai Health), director of nursing services at North Idaho Advanced Care Hospital and an appointment by the governor to the Emergency Medical System Physician Commission.

Masterson, of Athol, has been an active in community service, serving as fire commissioner for the Timberlake Fire District and providing packing services for the United States Forest Service. 

"These roles underscore his dedication to the safety, health, and preservation of the community," the release said.

Raised on a family ranch in Kootenai County, Masterson's roots in the community are deep and personal. The ranch, home to generations of his family, instilled in him a profound respect for the land and the people of Kootenai County, the release said.

"It is this connection that fuels his campaign and his vision for the county's future," the release said.

As a Republican candidate for commissioner, Masterson pledges to leverage his diverse background in service and leadership to enhance the county's infrastructure, support rural and agricultural communities and implement policies that promote sustainable economic growth, the release said.

His campaign is built on the principles of fiscal responsibility, transparency and a commitment to the constituents of Kootenai County.

"Bringing a wealth of experience from both his military and medical careers, as well as his extensive community service, Masterson is deeply committed to the prosperity and well-being of the county and its residents," the release said.

Masterson is seeking the First District seat held by Commissioner Bill Brooks.

Candidate filing for the May 21 primary elections begins March 4 and runs through March 15.
