WATER POLO
North Idaho Water Polo Club wins state championships again: The North Idaho Water Polo Club (NIWP) boys and girls teams defended their state high school championships in Boise over the past weekend.
In doing so, the Coeur d’Alene team extended its series of Idaho state championship titles. In the championship games, the boys Narwhals varsity team beat a strong Boise team 8-4, while the girls varsity team resoundingly beat the Boise Sharks with a final score of 14-7.
Both the boys and girls teams have won 11 titles in a row (including the first five years in which the state championships were a coed event).
Up until last year the club was called the Kroc/CDA Water Polo club. As of Jan. 1, it become a separate high school club called North Idaho Water Polo (NIWP).
Men’s Division Games: The tournament started Friday with the teams playing several games in the evening. The NIWP boys varsity team played in a hard-fought game against a tough Boise squad. Boise jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, surprising the North Idaho Narwhals. The Cd'A team recollected itself after the first quarter and began battling back, but was still down a couple goals at the half time break 8-6. The team came alive in the third quarter with a series of goals and outscored the Sharks 6 goals to 2 and took the lead at 12-10. The Narwhals extended their lead further in the fourth quarter, eventually winning by a final score of 17-12. The NIWP varsity team had an easier time of it in the second game with the Cd'A club defeating Magic Valley 21-14. North Idaho scored fast and early in the game and ran the score up to 12-3 in the first half. Magic Valley scored a number of goals late in the match to bring the final score closer.
Also on Friday, the NIWP boys JV team played the Boise JV team and won 20-3. The team jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the first quarter and continued to score from multiple positions throughout the game. Taylor Holding led the boys with four goals. The NIWP boys JV team also played Rigby Friday evening and again won in convincing fashion. A number of players scored, including Taylor Holding, Luke Griffiths, Malachi Dickerson, Brennan McCrea, Miles Rigg, Owen Christianson and Jet Yang.
The championship rounds began on Saturday afternoon. In the third-place championship, the boys JV were able to play up a level and went against the Magic Valley varsity team. The game was close in the first quarter with Magic Valley leading 3-1. The larger size and experience of the MV varsity squad was eventually able to outlast the Cd'A boys, with the game ending in a score of 15-6.
In the championship game, Travis Strimback started off the scoring with a steal and a couple fast breaks to put the Narwhals up by two goals. The Cd'A squad continued to build its lead throughout the game and was leading 8-4 in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. The championship game had a scary moment when one of the Boise players suffered a neck injury with a couple minutes left in the game and required medical attention, though was determined to be in good condition later. Due to the large difference in score and the short time remaining, the coaches and referees agreed to call the game and declare North Idaho Water Polo the winning team.
Brody Walters led the scoring for the team with three goals in the championship game and 12 goals total in the tournament. Travis Strimback also had three goals in the championship and 10 goals overall. Other varsity players who scored multiple goals in the tournament included Mason Curry (4), Taylor Holding (4), Owen Call (3) and Owen Bentley (3). Other varsity players who scored goals included Micah Minix, Elijah Minix, Ben Simmons, Will Park and Owen Christianson. Garrett Snyder provided excellent goalie work throughout the tournament, blocking multiple shots to keep the opposition’s score low, especially in the championship game.
Women’s Division: The North Idaho girl’s varsity team had an early round game against the Magic Valley varsity team. The girls team scored on most of its possessions while shutting down Magic Valley until the fourth quarter. winning16-1. The Narwhals also played the Boise Sharks on Friday and also dominated that contest. Boise was unable to stop the counter-attacks and high scoring offense of the NIWP club while only being able to score a couple goals themselves against the Narwhals' strong press defense and excellent goalie work of Lauren Watson and Keelie Halsted.
The NIWP JV team also came out very strong in their first game on Friday, outscoring Rigby 7-2 in the first quarter and then steadily building their lead throughout the game, finishing with a final score of 19-7. On Saturday the JV team played the Magic Valley varsity team. The game was one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Magic Valley jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter. NIWP regrouped and scored five goals in the second quarter to go up 5-3. The teams played evenly in the third quarter with MV outscoring NIWP by a goal to bring the score to 6-5. The Narwhals then came out finished the game with a burst of goals in the fourth quarter to win with a final score of 10-6.
In the Girls third-place championship game, the NIWP girls JV squad played the Boise varsity team. The Narwhals were fired up and quickly scored five goals in the first quarter to the Sharks' single goal. The team continued to score throughout the game, finishing with at 20-5 victory. A number of girls scored in the contest, including Greta Hover, Claire Thorpe, Laura Mohr, Ella Mohr, Addy Karoblis, Gracelyn Kenney, Onessa Warren, Vivian Traina, Ava Swigart, Daisy Whitney and Keelie Halsted.
In the championship game against Magic Valley, the NIWP girls varsity squad came out very strong and scored six goals to lead 6-1 after the first quarter. The team steadily added points throughout the game and finished up with a solid 14-7 championship win. Leading scorers for the tournament were Gianna Gonzalez and Maren Hover with 10 each and Greta Hover with eight goals. Other scorers included Simone Gonzalez (5), Ava Swigart (7), Jillian Provost (7), Lauren Watson (5) and Alena Gonzelez (3). Other girls who scored on the varsity squad included Ella Mohr, Claire Thorpe and Keelie Halsted. Lauren Watson and Keelie Halsted also did excellent work as the primary goalies.
The team is looking forward to next year’s season. While NIWP will lose important players to graduation, including seniors Ben Simmons, Brody Walters, Micah Minix, Elijah Minix, Mason Bentley, Travis Strimback, Simone Gonzalez, Maren Hover and Vivian Traina, they have a excellent JV group and are expecting a number of players from the team’s development squad to move up.
Water polo in Idaho is looking to expand next season as number of new teams are expected next year, including teams from Coeur d’Alene, Twin Falls, Rigby and Boise and possibly new teams from Nampa, Pocatello, Snake River and Bishop Kelly. The NIWP club practices year-round at the Kroc Aquatic Center and is open to all high school students in the area. The Kroc Center also supports younger junior (ages 7-10) and development teams (ages 11-14).
