ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Kristine Schmidt, a freshman from Coeur d’Alene High, pitched a complete game shutout — striking out four — for North Idaho in an 8-0 win over St. Petersburg College, giving Cardinal coach Shay Chapman her 100th win as coach on Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s super exciting,” said Chapman, in her fifth season as coach. “It’s a testament to my team. My assistant coach (Megan Carver) has been amazing with recruiting and getting the kids to buy in right away. It’s been fun, and I’m humbled by it. I had a great mentor in Don Don (Williams, who started the program and took over the program at Southern Utah in 2019.”

NIC lost in the nightcap 6-5 in 11 innings to move to 3-1 on the season.

Further information was not available.

“We’re off to a really good start,” Chapman said. “We’ve got a lot of depth and we’re excited to see where the season takes us. We’ve got a solid group of freshmen that are stepping up. With the depth we have, we should go far.”

NIC returns to action on March 2 at a crossover tournament at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Wash., facing Clackamas and Southwestern Oregon.
