5A

POST FALLS — The Post Falls won their 10th straight 5A Region 1 wrestling championship on Saturday at The Arena.

Not that that was what the Trojans were focused on this day.

“What’s funny is, I didn’t know that until a kid looked at the trophy and said that,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said.  “It’s really something to be proud of; an achievement for our program as a whole.”

More important on this day was qualifying as many kids to state, scheduled for next Friday and Saturday at ICCU Arena (formerly Holt Arena) in Pocatello.

Post Falls qualified 16 to state by finishing in the top three in their weight class. Coeur d’Alene qualified 13, Lake City seven.

A handful of wild cards statewide are also up for grabs, to be determined at a seeding meeting today.

Post Falls had nine regional champions — Matthew Hamilton (106 pounds), Logan Loaiza (113), Rider Seguine (120), Tanner Piper (138), Tyson Barnhart (145), Damion Hamilton (152), Trey Smith (160) and Seth Martin (170).

Coeur d’Alene had three regional champs — Rocco White (98), Boston Spear (126) and Gabe Grassel (182).

Lake City had two winners — Garrett Leonard (195) and Sebastian Mosman (220).

Reardon had praise in particular for Seguine and Smith, who recently returned from injuries.

Seguine, a two-time state champion, suffered a broken hand at Tri-State in December, and recently returned to action. Smith had an infection in his knee, and regionals was his first match since.

“I want to brag about how tough those guys are, and sticking with it, and seeing it through,” Reardon said.

It was the first regional title for White, Spear and Grassel.

“I thought everybody wrestled well and competed hard,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Colton Tucker got beat at 145, but lost 4-2 to the top guy in the state (Barnhart). Rocco has been steady all year. Good to see Gabe Grassel do something at the end.”

Leonard won his title by major decision.

“He’s a good kid,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said of Kendall Sage of Post Falls, “a returning state placer, and Kendall put it on him.”

Owen also had praise for junior Alden Curto (145), who lost his first match of the day, then fought all the way back to the third-place match, where he beat the same kid he lost to in the first round to earn a berth to state.

“To lose your first one and come all the way back, he was fantastic,” Owen said.

TEAM SCORES — 1, Post Falls 451.5. 2, Coeur d’Alene 318.5. 3, Lewiston 243. 4, Lake City 233.
