PF teacher receives $500 national DAR grant
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Junior Membership Committee recently awarded Greensferry Elementary School teacher Becky Rice one of the prized Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grants for 2024.
Rice was sponsored by the local Lt. George Farragut Chapter NSDAR.
The grants allow classroom teachers to fund a variety of projects that will have a direct impact on learning for students.
Rice submitted an application requesting funds to use at this year’s Idaho History Rendezvous, a culminating experience bringing together much of the history students learned about in the classroom throughout the year. She was awarded $500.
“Our Idaho history includes concepts related to westward expansion, Native Americans, gold mining, missionaries and more,” Rice said in a recent news release. “The Idaho History Rendezvous provides opportunities for students to ride a horse, cast a fishing pole, shoot a bow and arrow, make Native American crafts, mine for gems using a mining pan, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, saw wood with a two-man saw, and enjoy a Dutch oven treat.”
The 2024 event is scheduled for June.
Authorized in 1938, this grant fund was named in memory of Helen Pouch who was the daughter of Helena R. Pouch, the first national chair of the Junior Membership Committee in 1937 and who later served as the president general of NSDAR from 1941-1944. Today, Junior DAR members award up to four $500 grants per state annually.
“We are excited to support Becky Rice and Greensferry Elementary School in this endeavor,” said Sara Houser, chair of the Lt. George Farragut Chapter’s Junior Membership Committee. “Supporting education is a primary objective of the national society, and we love supporting local classrooms and teachers through this grant.”
The Lt. George Farragut Chapter, based out of Coeur d’Alene, birthed the Pleasantview Chapter in Post Falls a year ago. Going forward, Post Falls teachers interested in applying for the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant are encouraged to contact the Pleasantview Chapter at idahoivy43@gmail.com. All others should contact Houser at ltgeorgefarragut@gmail.com.
