PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lakeside wins district title, advances to state play-in game

| February 8, 2024 1:20 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman kept a little something in the playbook for the 1A Division I District 1 championship game at North Idaho College.

Lakeside pressed its way to an 18-6 lead after the first quarter as the second-seeded Knights beat the top-seeded Miners 57-45 on Thursday night at Rolly Williams Court for a second straight district title.

The teams split two games in the regular season, with each winning on the road.

“We were kind of saving our full-on pressure for this last game,” Dohrman said. “You’ve got to save something for these really important games where it’s win or go home, and that’s what we did tonight. We were working on that pressure all season and got some shots to fall tonight.

Lakeside (9-9) will face the winner of tonight’s District 4 second-place game between Murtaugh and Valley on Saturday in a state play-in game at Grangeville High at 3 p.m. Wallace finishes 11-6.

Sophomore Kyleigh Wolfe and senior Martina Rivera scored 17 points each for Lakeside.

“We got some shots to fall tonight and were able to rebound a little better,” Dohrman said. “We still missed a few free throws, but the biggest part was our defensive effort. And that was every girl that stepped on the floor tonight.”

Wallace senior Britany Phillips, named the Scenic Idaho Conference’s MVP following the game, finished with 20 points.

“Lakeside is a great team and well coached,” Wallace coach Nicole Farkas said. “We struggled to shoot well and get anything going. My team played hard the entire time and didn’t give up, but we just couldn’t get any momentum. Lakeside is underrated and will surprise some teams down the stretch.”

Timberlake (15-5) will play host to Bonners Ferry (10-8) tonight at 6, with the winner headed to state and the losers’ season over.

“It was a must-win game, and the girls found a way to get the win,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said.

Kursten McKellips added 10 points for Timberlake, which jumped out to a 17-9 first-quarter lead. Bonners Ferry freshman Taren Bateman picked up three quick fouls and sat most of the first half, but the Badgers rallied to tie it at 25 at the half.

Timberlake held a slim lead in the fourth quarter, before Brooke Petesch sank a 3-pointer to pull the Badgers within 44-43 with some 2 minutes left.

Bonners, which won Game 1 55-53 on Monday, missed a potential go-ahead layup in the final minute, and Marissa Needs sank two free throws for Timberlake with 12.4 seconds left.

“We came out in the first quarter and played well and with a lot of energy,” Miller said. “It wasn’t a pretty game for either team; both teams fought hard. We made enough free throws at the end to pull it out.”
