BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry Badgers, last year’s state runners-up and ranked second in 3A by the state’s media this week, have blown most teams out so far this season.

Two of their closest games have come against the Lakeside Knights, ranked second in 1A Division I, and the defending state champions.

On Tuesday night, Bonners Ferry inched away in the second half after leading by two at intermission to beat Lakeside 72-61.

“They played extremely scrappy tonight,” Bonners Ferry coach Nathan Williams said of Lakeside (11-3), which jumped out to an 11-2 lead. “I was impressed how scrappy they were, how they played defense.”

Junior Asher Williams, last year’s 3A boys Player of the Year in Idaho, scored 30 points for Bonners Ferry (17-3). Junior Thomas Bateman hit two 3-pointers and scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. Junior Eli Blackmore added 12 points for the Badgers.

Sophomore Tyson Charley scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half for Lakeside. He hit three 3s and scored 10 points in the fourth quarter. Senior Blaze Callahan added 18 points for the Knights in a game that was tight all the way until the closing minutes.

“The last seven possessions for Lakeside, we got six stops,” said Nathan Williams, whose team committed just two of its 12 turnovers in the second half. “Hats off to them, they played tough and fast and scrappy. It was a great game for both of us.”

Lakeside travels to Clark Fork on Thursday.

Bonners Ferry is idle until playing host to Timberlake on Feb. 20 in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series for the 3A District 1 title.
