PREP WRESTLING: Trojans toughen up, down Vikings

| February 2, 2024 1:17 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Visiting Post Falls flipped the momentum with pins from Seth Martin (182 pounds) and Kendall Sage (195) as the Trojans defeated the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 56-19 in a dual at Elmer Jordan Court on Thursday.

Kyden Martin (220) won by technical fall at 220 for Post Falls, which built a 35-9 lead midway through the dual.

“Coeur d’Alene’s a tough team,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “I told our guys beforehand it’s not about wins and losses, but to go out and wrestle hard and tough. And they did that tonight.”

Sophomore Rocco White, who was battling the flu, beat Gage Loftin at 98 pounds.

“It was just a gutsy performance by him,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “He didn’t want to give up a forfeit, so he competed. He hadn’t practiced all week, but he’s a scrapper. Loftin’s a tough wrestler, but he fought hard.”

Rider Seguine (120) returned to the lineup for the first time since Tri-State with an 8-0 major decision for Post Falls.

“I was really proud of him,” Reardon said. “Being out that long, he didn’t hit a wall during the match and kept picking up speed, which shows with his training. When he gets back to full speed, he’ll be really good.”

Freshman Jordan Schield won by major decision at 132 for Coeur d’Alene, which travels to Lewiston on Feb. 9.

“I was happy with our effort,” Moffat said. “The score was a lot tighter than it shows, and there were a lot of close matches that could have gone either way. We had some upsets, and so did they. Our effort is there, but we’re still making the same mistakes.”

Post Falls competes in the Conrad Garner Invitational tonight and Saturday at Bonners Ferry High.
