PREP WRESTLING: Lakeland sweeps through 5A duals; Rollie Lane next

RATHDRUM — Carson Leonard (120 pounds), Jaren Knopp (126), Cole Cooper (144), Austin Howell (150) and Kalab Hammer (157) went 3-0 on the day for the Hawks, who swept Sandpoint, Lewiston and Minico dual matches at Lakeland High. 

Lakeland’s Zane Gray won by pin at 285 against Minico — the reigning 4A champion — to clinch that dual 46-38 for the Hawks. 

“We’re still missing a few guys, but we fought through it and got some key wins,” Lakeland coach Will Edelblute said. “Cole Cooper had a phenomenal day, as did Carson with a win against a Minico kid (Greyson Molina) he split matches with last year, and he won teched him. Minico is the No. 1 team in the state, and it’s a really big confidence booster to show that we’re right where we want to be.” 

Sandpoint junior William Bomba (285 pounds) won all three of his bouts and the Bulldogs went 1-2.

Bomba won his first two matches by way of a first-round pin and his third by a 12-9 decision, which proved to be crucial as Sandpoint edged out 5A Inland Empire League newcomer Lewiston by three points, 42-39.

Also picking up two wins for Sandpoint, which lost 49-30 to Minico and 57-21 to Lakeland, were Zak Wood (120), Charlie Becker (175), and Jackson Holman (215); Holman also had a third win by forfeit.

Lakeland and Sandpoint will compete in the Rollie Lane Invitational next Friday and Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

ST. MARIES — The Bulldogs won six of the nine weight classes to capture a fourth-straight tournament title, winning the Chad E. Ross Memorial Tournament girls title at St. Maries High. 

Senior Emma Garman (120 pounds) won three matches, one by injury default, another by pin, and the championship by a 3-0 decision to take home gold. Vanessa Hood (126) won two matches by pin to capture an individual title. 

Violet Henney (107), and Sylvia Becker (165-185) won three matches each, Mackenzee Donenfeld (100) and Zyxloh Johnson (152) two matches each to come away victorious in their round robin brackets.
