COEUR d’ALENE — It was a struggle at first.

But once Lake City needed some offense, it seemed to come quick.

Senior Cason Miller scored eight points, including the final five of the game, to rally the Lake City Timberwolves past the Mt. Spokane Wildcats of Mead 62-59 on Friday night at Lake City High.

Senior Reese Strawn hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 56-56 for Lake City, which trailed 30-22 at halftime.

“Mt. Spokane is a really physical team that pushed every button that we were susceptible to,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “But we matched it, which was a huge step for us. In the first half, we really struggled to score with 12 points in the first 12 minutes but had a huge difference in the second half. In the fourth, they didn’t score a lot and we were able to get the stops when we needed stops.”

Sophomore Jordan Carlson had 19 points and seven rebounds, junior Josh Watson 17 points and 10 rebounds for Lake City (9-3), which travels to North Central of Spokane on Monday.

Nalu Vargas scored 23 points for Mt. Spokane (6-4).

LA MESA, Calif. — The Tigers of Oklahoma were as advertised, according to Trojan coach Mike McLean.

But once his team adjusted, so was his squad.

Post Falls fell behind 24-7 after the first quarter, but held tough in the final three quarters in a first-round loss to Broken Arrow in the Surf ‘N Slam Classic at Helix Charter School.

“In these big national tournaments, the first three minutes of the game are key,” McLean said. “Especially with two teams that don’t know each other well. They came out and their defense really affected us. They challenged each shot at the rim and it took our guys a quarter to adjust to what you can and can’t do against that length. Once we got through that first quarter, we were able to execute a lot better, especially on the defensive end. We got a lot of good looks in the first, but they altered a lot of our shots. But I was proud of the resiliency that we showed adjusting so quickly. Both Isaiah (Naylor) and Cashton came off the bench and played their best games of the season for us.”

Tyras Blake and Cashton Bodman scored seven points each for Post Falls (6-4), which faces Wasilla, Alaska, today at noon in a consolation game.

Logan Shockley scored 16 points for Broken Arrow (8-0).
