“We wrestled well today,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “I think we were on Christmas break a little early and weren’t that sharp in our first two duals. You could tell that they needed a little bit of a break, so I think it’s going to be good for us. A little time away is going to be a good thing.”

Lake City competes in the Pacific Northwest Classic on Jan. 3-4 at University High in Spokane.

Johnson, Schenk third for

Lake City at Mallet invite

SPOKANE — Alexxis Johnson (120 pounds) and Poppy Schenk (130) finished third for the Timberwolves in the M2 Mallet tournament at Rogers High.

Schenk advanced to the semifinals before battling back to beat Addison Stigall of Newport 27-9 in the third-place match.

“I was super impressed with Poppy,” Lake City girls coach Nathan DeLeon said. “She had limited experience and really separated herself this weekend. She made some big turns and think she’s going to be a force to be reckoned with in the next three years.”

Johnson, who fell in the second round, battled back to win her final six matches.

“Alexxis has had some tough matches early in tournaments,” DeLeon said. “She always shows great leadership. She’s just continues to work hard to get back on top of the podium at state.”

Lake City returns to action on Jan. 3 with a home meet.
