PREP BASKETBALL: Viking boys wind down busy week with win over Liberty
• BOYS
COEUR d’ALENE — After playing three high-intensity games in as many days at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas, flying home immediately after, and arriving home after midnight, you can forgive Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams for wondering just how full the tank was for his team on Saturday.
As it turned out, it was still pretty full.
Senior Carter Rupp scored 23 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, hitting six 3-pointers as the Vikings beat the Liberty Patriots of Renton, Wash., 88-72 at North Idaho College.
“Carter is so good in the open court, and he can stop on a dime and get his shot,” Adams said. “He put the nail in them in the second half, but it was really a team effort. Kai (Wheeler) and Evan (Robertson) were really good around the basket. Maxwell (Riley) had another good game around the basket and Caden (Symons) made a lot of plays.”
Coeur d’Alene (5-4), which played three games in Boise last weekend, returned home for two days, then traveled to Las Vegas on Tuesday, then returned home late Friday for Saturday’s game.
“We’d played seven games in nine days, so I was a little nervous considering how late we got back,” Adams said. “I was a little nervous with the energy and effort in the tank, but they made this game a track meet. I was really impressed with them for that.”
Riley scored 19 points, Wheeler 15 points and Symons 14 points for Coeur d’Alene, which hosts Hermiston (Ore.) on Jan. 3.
