PREP ROUNDUP: Post Falls battles back, downs Lakeland

| December 20, 2024 1:20 AM

• GIRLS BASKETBALL

POST FALLS — It was a battle.

But what else might you expect from two rival schools?

Junior Kailey Walton scored 16 points for Post Falls, which rallied from a 31-23 halftime deficit to beat the Lakeland Hawks 56-51 in an Inland Empire League game at The Arena on Thursday.

“We just battled,” Post Falls coach Mike Divilbiss said. “We hung in there and I was really pleased with how we responded. We didn’t change anything from the first to second half, but just executed a lot better and our spacing was really good offensively.”

Brooklyn Reece scored 13 points, Olivia Hollenbeck 11 for Post Falls (3-8), which faces Lewis and Clark in the West Valley Eagle Classic on Dec. 27 at Lewis and Clark in Spokane.

Landree Simon scored 14 points, Macy Bretveld 13 points for Lakeland (5-2), which competes in the Avista Holiday Tournament Jan. 2-4 at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston.

“We got better today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “We started to establish some roles and played really well defensively, holding them to 54 when they’ve been averaging 75 points a game. They hit a last-second shot and we missed a few chances but gave ourselves a chance. The competition here is tough, but it’s just making us better through this experience in each game.”

Symons scored 14 points, Kai Wheeler 12, Evan Robertson 10 for Coeur d’Alene (3-4), which faces Roosevelt of Portland, Ore., today at 4:30 p.m. to conclude the Vikings' run in the tournament.

Jake Runia scored 12 points for Orofino (2-4, 1-2), which finished 2 of 12 from the 3-point line.

• WRESTLING

Post Falls 67

Lake City 15

COEUR d’ALENE — Without seven wrestlers due to either injury or illness, Lake City coach Corey Owen hoped that by bumping Nathan Booth to 190 pounds from 175 could get his team going.

And it did.

But even good starts don’t always end that way.

Booth notched a 9-3 decision for the Timberwolves, who also got wins by Josh MacDonald (138) pounds and Duncan Morrow (150).

“Post Falls is probably the best team in the state, and someone you don’t want to wrestle when you’re dealing with illness and injury,” Owen said. “But the kids really competed well and those young kids got the spotlight and responded. But they were a little overmatched tonight. We’d approached Nathan and he was on board with doing what was best for the team and handled himself really well.”

“It was a good dual and the guys that wrestled put up a lot of points and really got after it,” Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “We had a couple of guys out, but those that filled in did a good job.”

Post Falls is scheduled to compete in the George Wild Invitational today and Saturday at Andrews Gymnasium in Kellogg.

Lake City competes in the West Valley duals tournament on Saturday.
