PREP BASKETBALL: Timberlake pushes past Lake City
• GIRLS
COEUR d’ALENE — There wasn’t much separation between Timberlake and host Lake City on Tuesday, at least early on.
Until there was.
Junior Malia Miller scored 22 points for the 4A Tigers in a 46-38 win over the 6A Timberwolves at Lake City High.
“Miller’s a tough kid,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “She’s quick and can shoot it really quick. She didn’t take too many twos and just gets to the right spot on the court.”
Senior Diana Nelson scored 13 points for Timberlake, which led 29-19 at halftime.
“Nelson uses her size around the hoop and does a good job of keeping the pressure off Miller,” Pratt said. “We turned it over a little too much tonight. It was a fun matchup, and if we’re at full strength, it’s a little closer. But Timberlake played really efficient, and that posed a problem as well.”
Senior Sadie Zimmernan scored eight of her 14 points in the first quarter for Lake City, which was without starting guard Macy Murphey on Tuesday.
“Lake City shoots the ball really well and that was our biggest concern,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller of Lake City, which made six 3-pointers. “Our biggest challenge was if we were going to be able to guard the perimeter and the girls did a good job.”
Timberlake lost starting guard Payton Young to a torn ACL and was also without Marissa Needs, who missed the game with an ankle injury.
“The kids showed a lot of toughness,” Matt Miller said. “Both teams were playing through some fatigue. I’m really proud of our kids with the schedule we’ve played and them continuning to do what they’ve been doing.”
Timberlake (10-0) travels to Lewiston on Thursday.
