EDITORIAL: Take a bow, Josh Hurwit
In January, Idaho is set to lose an exceptional public servant: U.S. Attorney for the District of Idaho, Josh Hurwit. As his tenure draws to a close, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude for his dedication to protecting our communities.
Hurwit’s work has been a model of public service, particularly in tackling some of the most pressing threats facing our state. His focus on combating fentanyl trafficking has been nothing short of exemplary. Fentanyl has ravaged communities across Idaho, and Hurwit’s office has been relentless in prosecuting those who distribute it. His team's efforts to dismantle distribution networks have been vital in the fight against this crisis.
Equally commendable is Hurwit’s commitment to protecting Idaho’s children. Under his leadership, his office has pursued those who distribute child pornography with determination and a deep sense of moral responsibility. These cases are both complex and emotionally draining, yet Hurwit has faced them head-on, never compromising on the pursuit of justice.
Beyond his legal work, Hurwit has made communication with the public a priority. He regularly visited North Idaho, taking the time to engage with communities, law enforcement and local leaders. His openness and accessibility have made a meaningful difference in fostering trust between his office and the people he served. Hurwit ensured that information was readily available, making it easier for citizens to stay informed and involved in the efforts to keep Idaho safe.
It's standard practice that U.S. attorneys conclude their service when a new president from a different party takes office. This transition is a normal part of our political system, and Hurwit's likely departure is not unexpected.
And don’t feel too sorry for him. Hurwit could easily transition to private practice, where salaries are significantly higher. But we hope, and trust, that he may one day return to public service in some form.
To Josh Hurwit: Thank you for your outstanding service to Idaho. Your leadership has made our communities safer, protected our most vulnerable and upheld the highest standards of public service.
