PREP BASKETBALL: Big third quarter pushes St. Maries past Grangeville

ST. MARIES — Junior JJ Yearout scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter for St. Maries, which blitzed Grangeville 31-4 in the period on the way to a 64-40 Central Idaho League win over the Bulldogs on Saturday at St. Maries High. 

“We got a lot of points off turnovers in the third,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We mixed up some presses and their starters didn’t handle the pressure, and their subs didn’t either. It was one of the better quarters we’ve had as a team.” 

Junior Jack Barta scored nine of his 18 points in the third, senior Hayden Defoort had seven points and 10 rebounds and junior Isaiah Gustaffe had nine points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists for St. Maries (3-3, 1-0 CIL), which hosts Orofino on Thursday. 

Grangeville is 1-4, 0-2.

SPOKANE — Tyras Blake led a balanced Trojan offense with 10 points in a nonleague win over the Saxons at Ferris High. 

“We knew Ferris was a well-coached team and always play hard,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “It was our third game in as many days, so it was a test to see how mentally and physically tough we were. We had to bounce back after a tough game last night (Friday against Gonzaga Prep), but the guys responded well. All 10 guys contributed, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.” 

Jaxon Lysne scored nine points for Post Falls (4-3), which travels to Sandpoint on Wednesday. 

Luke Roland scored 17 points for Ferris (2-3).

OROFINO — Senior Nate Stifel scored 19 points and the visiting Spartans took their first lead midway through the second quarter and never trailed again en route to the Central Idaho League win over the Maniacs.

Senior Carter Cook registered eight points and pulled down 11 boards, senior Palmer Coleman eight points and six boards for Priest River (5-0, 1-0 CIL), which trailed 10-1 to start the game and took a 25-24 lead with 4:34 to go in the second quarter — a lead the Spartans never relinquished.

Hudson Schneider scored 19 points for Orofino (2-3, 1-1).

Priest River travels to Kellogg on Thursday for another league matchup.

FRENCHTOWN, Mont. — Junior Malia Miller hit 7 of 10 from the 3-point line, scoring a game-high 31 points on 14 shots as the Tigers beat the Chiefs at Frenchtown High. 

“She was just really efficient and her teammates found her when she was open,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “She played really well, and everyone on the team did as well with only six healthy players. The kids showed a lot of toughness and handled pressure really well. They were super tough and handled it well.” 

Diana Nelson scored 10 points for Timberlake (9-0), which travels to Lake City on Tuesday. 

Arianna Zepeda and Zaliee Hewankorn scored 10 points each for Ronan (1-1).

OROFINO — Junior Aleigha Jensen hit three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds as the visiting Spartans rallied late to pick up a Central Idaho League win over the Maniacs.

Senior Desi Humphrey added 10 points, nine steals, and was 6-for-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch for Priest River (5-1, 1-0 CIL) which trailed 21-17 at halftime.

Senior Rilee Tiffin had 11 points and 15 rebounds for Orofino (2-6, 0-2), which scored just nine points in the second half. 

Priest River plays host to Riverside on Monday for a nonleague contest.
