Idaho, U.S. averages both near $3 per gallon

Idaho drivers have started another countdown, but it’s not for Christmas or New Year’s. Gas prices currently sit at $3.02 for a gallon of regular, both here in the Gem State and for the national average.

“Drivers are getting pretty excited about the prospect of filling up for a price that starts with a ‘2,’ and some of our Idaho communities are already doing so,” says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “Most of us will gladly put the savings towards another stocking stuffer.” 

Idaho’s average is about 3 cents less than a week ago, 20 cents less than a month ago and 44 cents less than a year ago. The national average is also about 3 cents less than a week ago, 7 cents less than a month ago and 15 cents less than a year ago. Today, 34 states have an average price below the $3 mark. 

Coeur d'Alene area prices have dipped into the low $2.70s and even the $2.60s.

Although the Energy Information Administration reports that gasoline demand jumped slightly last week, stock levels also rose, helping curb pump prices. 

The West Texas Intermediate benchmark for crude oil is trading near $69 per barrel. Crude prices jumped briefly when the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries announced that current production cuts would continue into the new year but appear to have calmed down almost immediately.
