PREP BASKETBALL: Lake City falls in fast-paced showdown

TUALATIN, Ore. — Junior Josh Watson scored a team-high 22 points for Lake City, which fell to the Tualatin Timberwolves 89-77 on Friday night. 

“It was a very high-paced game and they had the last run,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “We got up, but it was a crazy fast game. It was a lot of points for a high school boys game, but honestly a great basketball game to be a part of.” 

Pat Vialva, who holds an offer from Portland State, scored 27 points for Tualatin (1-0). Jemai Lake, who has interest from Weber State, added 20 for the host Timberwolves. 

“They’re a talented group of guards,” Anderson said. “They just made baskets on shots we defended really well. It was just a kind of tip your hat kind of game.” 

Sophomore Jordan Carlson scored 19 points for Lake City (2-1), which faces Union High of Vancouver, Wash., today at 1 p.m.

RICHLAND, Wash. — Junior Jaxon Lysne scored 14 points, senior Cobe Cameron 13 points for the Trojans in a loss to the Pirates of Yakima at Richland High. 

“This was a good team,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said of Davis. “We’ve put our guys in the gauntlet right away, but I was proud of our effort and our guys competed each possession. We competed against a really good team, which will only prepare us for Coeur d’Alene and Lake City. It was back and forth throughout, but they made some free-throws late.” 

Cesar Hernandez scored 28 points for Davis. 

Post Falls (0-2) hosts West Valley High of Yakima today at 3 p.m.

WALLACE — A steal by Timberlake and a layup by Payden DeVore gave the Tigers a one-point lead with under a minute left, and Timberlake went on to beat the host Miners to advance to the championship game of the Silver Valley Tournament at Kirby Krulitz Court. 

Seniors Nate Dykeman and Tyler Engelson scored 20 and 17 points respectively for Timberlake (1-1), which plays Kellogg tonight at 7 for the title. 

The Tigers trailed by more than 20 points before rallying. 

“They came out and stuck it to us; they shot the ball really well, Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “The third quarter we figured out how to go inside to the post.” 

Dykeman scored 14 of his 20 in the second half. Engelson hit 4 of 4 free throws down the stretch, and Max Simpson hit 2 of 2. 

Cooper Miller scored 22 points, Julian Davis 17 for Wallace (1-2), which plays Genesee today at 5:30 in the consolation game.

WALLACE — Porter Lewis and Cayden Honnerlaw scored 10 points each for the Wildcats in a win over the Bulldogs in a semifinal game in the Silver Valley Tournament at Kirby Krulitz Court. 

“We did a good job of coming out and playing hard,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “We came out and sped them up and forced some turnovers. Everyone did a good job of chipping in and doing what we needed to do.”

Ty Cheney and Radley McDonald scored nine points each for Kellogg (1-1), which faces either Timberlake or Wallace in the championship game tonight at 7. 

Genesee plays in the consolation game at 5:30.

LEWISTON — JJ Yearout had 18 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Lumberjacks, who were tied with the Blue Devils 25-25 midway through the third quarter before falling at Lewiston High. 

“We just kind of went cold,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We had too many turnovers and couldn’t get any shots to fall.” 

Landon Riberich scored six points for St. Maries (2-1), which faces Moscow today at 11 a.m. at Lewiston High. 

Truman Bullington scored 16 points for Walla Walla (2-0), which faces Lewiston today.

CRAIGMONT — Sophomore Logan Strobel scored 17 points for the shorthanded Warriors, who suited up just six players in the nonleague loss to the Huskies. 

“We had our best game since I’ve been coaching these boys,” second-year Kootenai coach Tom Tucker said. “I saw the light in their eyes as the offense clicked, and they started understanding basketball. Logan Strobel out-did himself tonight.” 

Freshman Dylan Gentry had 12 rebounds for Kootenai (0-2), which plays host to Genesis Prep on Wednesday. 

Trevor Knowlton scored 19 points, Aiden Miller 18 for Highland (1-1).

EAGLE — Sophomore Macy Murphey scored 19 points for the Timberwolves in a loss to the Mustangs at Eagle High. 

Senior Sadie Zimmerman scored 13 points for Lake City (3-4), which trailed 33-27 at halftime. 

“That third quarter kind of got us,” said Lake City coach David Pratt, whose team was outscored 15-5 in the quarter. “They picked up the pressure and got into us a little more defensively. We battled back in the fourth, but it was too late.” 

Taya Nelson scored 16 points for Eagle (6-0), which hosts Post Falls today. 

Lake City travels to Meridian today.

MERIDIAN — The host Grizzlies outscored the Trojans 20-8 in the third quarter to pull away at Rocky Mountain High. 

“We did not execute very well offensively after playing really well last night (Thursday),” Post Falls coach Mike Divilbiss said. “We took the lead in the third quarter, but had a couple of bad turnovers that took the wind our of our sails. Defensively, we were pretty good, but we’ve got to find ways to get the ball inside and balance out our offense.” 

Kailey Walton scored nine points for Post Falls (2-6), which travels to Eagle today at 11 a.m. PST. 

Logan Sailors scored 12 points for Rocky Mountain (3-3), which hosts Coeur d’Alene today in a rematch of a state 5A opening round game from last February.
