PREP BASKETBALL: Lake City gets what it wants from Camas

| December 6, 2024 1:15 AM

CAMAS, Wash. — Visiting Lake City got everything it wanted, and a little more out of its nonleague road opener on Thursday.

Good environment.

Close game.

A victory.

Sophomore Jordan Carlson scored 19 points and junior Josh Watson added 15 for the Timberwolves, who held off the Camas Papermakers 56-53 to improve to 2-0.

Camas, in its season opener, hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left. Lake City missed a pair of free throws, but a tying shot at the buzzer rimmed out for Camas.

“They had a good look,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “We opted not to foul after Jordan had fouled out earlier in the fourth. They were bigger and super athletic in the post, so we let them take it and it almost went in.”

Senior Reese Strawn, who grew up in the area before transferring to Lake City his freshman year, added nine points.

“It was such a good experience with all three levels down here on a charter bus,” Anderson said. “This game has been in the works for over a year, and it was nice to get Reece back down here. He would have went to Camas had he stayed, so he was playing against his old AAU buddies. Everyone was razzing us and it was a real old-school feel.”

Lake City travels to Tualatin, Ore., tonight.

Nyima Namru scored 14 points for Camas.

“This one hurt,” second-year Kootenai coach Tom Tucker said. “I have to take the hit on this one; I took too much time on our new offense and neglected some pretty important things, like press break. They pressed us all game and we fell apart. We found ourselves in deep foul trouble with a short bench. The young men played hard and found out where the work needs to be done.”

“I’m really proud of them,” Post Falls coach Mike Divilbiss said. “They showed up ready to go. We got here at 12:30 p.m., ate and got to where we’re staying. The girls got off the bus and played hard, and it takes a lot of maturity to do that. We improved as the game went on and got a little more aggressive defensively, which was working well for us.”

Junior Malia Miller scored 9 of her 13 points in the first quarter for Timberlake (5-0), which played with only six players.

“We were really balanced tonight, which was good to see,” Miller said. “We played good defense, and I really liked our toughness with only six bodies. We looked our strongest in the fourth and there wasn’t a lot of rest.”

“Sandpoint’s a really good, well-coached team,” Miller said. “They do good stuff on both sides of the ball. I knew it was going to be a good game and they’ve got some really good guards. It was a really good matchup.”
