PRESS CHRISTMAS FOR ALL Say a prayer for this dad and his little boy
As part of the annual Press Christmas for All campaign, we share with readers the stories of those who have received help from the program. This is one of them.
It's been a rough go for "Seth" and his toddler, "Ayden."
The young dad was given sole custody of his son after his ex, Ayden's mom, walked out on them following her failure to fulfill requirements set by Child Protective Services.
Seth has been working with Press Christmas for All referring partner Open Arms Real Choices Clinic for more than a year. The nonprofit clinic helps families and individuals navigate unintended pregnancies and unexpected parenthood. The only family member Seth has in the area is unable to offer any help. He has struggled with employment that offers flexibility for day care. He quit his old job and found a new one to accommodate the child care schedule.
"He always comes in here looking exhausted, but we notice how he makes it a priority to get support," said Vicki Scribner, director of client services for Open Arms. "What I see is that he makes all of his son’s appointments. His son has glasses, so I know he has taken time out of his schedule for his eye appointments."
She said Ayden is well-adjusted despite the difficult situation. She said the fact that Seth comes in with Ayden every week for emotional support speaks volumes, especially when it is usually moms who seek out these services.
"I’m very impressed with his dedication to being a good dad," Scribner said. "That’s evidenced in how happy his little boy is."
Seth told Press Christmas for All he is still struggling but grateful for those who have been there for him.
"I just recently lost my job, so I've been job searching," he said Wednesday. "It’s been some trying times, but I’ve had lots of support from my local church and still from Open Arms. I would definitely be having a harder time if I didn’t have the community that I’ve had."
The air conditioner in Seth's car doesn't work. He worries about Ayden's health when they travel during hot summer days.
Press Christmas for All awarded Seth assistance to fix the air conditioner in his car after Open Arms staff realized he and the baby were coming in super early in the day to avoid driving in the peak hot hours.
"They would come in sometimes just beet red from the heat," Scribner said.
Although he has yet to find a way to do without his car while the repair is being made, he said he is thankful for the program for helping him with anything at all.
"I feel like it's God's blessing just getting the help I can get," he said. "It’s nice to know next summer my son won’t be sweating buckets in his car seat."
Each year, Press readers donate generously to Press Christmas for All.
Every penny raised is distributed to Kootenai County residents.
All overhead costs are covered by The Hagadone Corp.
The gift recipients are our neighbors who are struggling, including the elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, the homeless and those with mental illnesses. Many who seek assistance from Christmas for All are working but living in poverty.
Beneficiaries of Press Christmas for All keep their dignity while the community provides a hand-up to help get them back on their feet.
Press Christmas for All is managed by The Hagadone Corp., with assistance from CharityReimagined.Org.
It is a legally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, run entirely by volunteers.
