PREP BASKETBALL: Lake City runs past University in opener

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Josh Watson scored a game-high 22 points for the Lake City Timberwolves in a 73-43 win over the University Titans in the season opener for both at Lake City High on Tuesday. 

Sophomore Jordan Carlson scored 13 points for Lake City, which travels to Camas, Wash., on Thursday. 

Jack Del Mese scored 12 points for University.

MEAD — Jaxon Lysne scored 19 points for the Trojans in an overtime loss to the Wildcats in the season opener for both at Mt. Spokane High. 

Jaceten Reijonen hit a 3-pointer to force overtime for Mt. Spokane, which got a game-high 25 points for Jaden Ghoreishi. 

“Mt. Spokane executed its stuff really well,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We were really good defensively for 2 ½ quarters, and had some breakdowns and started to settle for some quicker shots.” 

Connor Carver scored 15 points for Post Falls, which faces Davis High of Yakima, Wash., at Richland High in Kennewick on Friday. 

“Jaxon and Connor had really good offensive games tonight,” McLean said. “We played really fast tonight and I was happy with our effort. But we’ve got a few things to clean up execution wise.”

SPOKANE — The visiting Hawks led most of the game, but the Wolfpack of Spokane, which played for a state title in Washington last year, pulled ahead after the game was tied with two minutes left in the season opener. 

Gabe Harris had 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Lakeland. Brayden Carrel added 15 points and nine boards, Mason Hensley 13 points, five rebounds and six assists, Ben Roth 12 points, three rebounds and three assists.

“For only having two weeks of practice, these kids played very hard,” first-year Lakeland coach Caleb De Fabiis said. “Little rotations and things on offense we need to clean up, but like I told the kids, we will only get better from this and we want to be playing our best basketball in February and March.” 

Lakeland plays host to Freeman on Saturday.

ST. MARIES — JJ Yearout scored 11 of his game-high 25 points in the third quarter as the Lumberjacks pulled away to defeat the Tigers in the nonleague opener for both at St. Maries High. 

Tyler Engelson scored 18 for Timberlake. 

“I thought our defensive intensity was good all night,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “Engelson can score 30 on any given night, but JJ did a good job on him tonight. We only had six turnovers, so I was really proud of how we took care of the ball tonight as well.” 

Jack Barta had 10 points, six rebounds and six assists and Hayden Defoort seven rebounds for St. Maries, which hosts Potlatch tonight. 

Lucas Vallieres scored 14 points for Timberlake, which plays at Wallace in the opening round of the Silver Valley Tournament on Friday at Kirby Krulitz Court.

CLARK FORK — Ben Connelly had 24 points and 12 steals for the visiting Saints, who won their first game as a full member of the Idaho High School Activities Association in their season opener against the Wampus Cats. 

Aedan O’Neill added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Saints, under first-year coach Chris Kiefer, and Grant Clemens had 12 points and four assists. 

Owen Howard had 27 points, Westin Caven 18 for Clark Fork. 

Coeur du Christ plays Spokane’s Chesterton Academy of Notre Dame on Saturday at the HUB Sports Center in Liberty Lake.

MEAD — Senior Myckenzee Mitley scored 16 points and Kailey Walton added 14 points for the Trojans, who led with two minutes remaining before falling to the Wildcats at Mt. Spokane High. 

“We had a lot of opportunities but had some critical turnovers and missed some shots down the stretch,” Post Falls coach Mike Divilbiss said. “It’s a process, and we’re still learning to win. They’re learning and growing, but we’re still a little raw and learning to practice and play the right way. We’re going to keep playing hard and continue to get better.” 

Post Falls (1-5) travels to Meridian on Thursday.

Senior Diana Nelson had 13 points and nine rebounds, senior Jozee MacArthur 10 points and seven rebounds for Timberlake (4-0), which hosts Sandpoint on Thursday. 

“The girls did a really good job on the defensive end,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, whose team limited North Central to eight field goals, four in each half. “I was really happy with the effort tonight.” 

It was the season opener for North Central.
