SPIRIT LAKE — In a battle of Intermountain League powers on Thursday, it was the visiting team that landed the first — and only — shot on Thursday.

Reagan Meine scored on an assist from Sophia Peppin in the 54th minute for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which held off the Timberlake Tigers 1-0 at Timberlake High.

“We knew this was going to be a tough battle,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “It wasn’t always pretty soccer, but the girls showed real grit tonight. Adysen (Robinson, who had eight saves), our keeper, had a great game and did everything she needed to direct the back line and keep a clean sheet. Our defense all over the field was strong.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter (2-0, 2-0 IML) faces St. Maries on Wednesday at The Fields in Post Falls.

Timberlake (2-1, 1-1 IML) hosts Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Vikings, missing four starters due to injury and another due to a red card received in Tuesday’s opener at Lakeland, fell to the Bengals in a nonleague game at Viking Field.

“The girls fought hard,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We’re battling some injuries and lost two more that couldn’t play in the second half. We had a lot of girls that stepped up and played hard. We could have had a few goals, but the Lewiston keeper made some great saves. For the situation they found themselves in, they showed up and played with a lot of heart today.”

Coeur d’Alene (0-2) travels to Lake City on Saturday.

Lewiston (2-2) visits Lakeland on Thursday.

MOSCOW — Once the Timberwolves fell behind, they had the Bears right where they wanted them.

Ava Roberts scored in the 66th minute for the Timberwolves, who scored twice in the second half to beat the Bears in an Inland Empire League match at the Moscow School District Community Playfields.

“We were a little slow getting off the bus,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “But once they scored, we took control of the game. It was a very slow, boring game for the first 20 minutes, but once they scored, it put us on our heels. I’m really happy with how we played in the second half.”

Kennedy Hartzell scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute for Lake City (2-0-1, 1-0-0 IEL), which hosts Coeur d’Alene on Saturday.

“After a challenging game against Sandpoint last Saturday, our boys received a much-needed wake-up call to compete until the very end,” first-year Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. “The physical matches in Lewiston and today’s game against Moscow have helped them find their groove and play with urgency. Our team’s identity is beginning to take shape.”

LEWISTON — With the bus trip to Lewiston for the team’s second match of the season, first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink might have had a reason to worry how his team might respond.

By the fourth minute, those worries were quickly washed away.

Senior Kason Pintler recorded a hat trick, senior Keaton Gust had two goals and an assist for the Vikings in a nonleague win over the Bengals at Walker Field.

“The boys answered the call and put Tuesday’s game behind us,” said Harmelink, whose team made 9 of 10 shots on goal. “Our boys were clinical in front of the net when we had a chance. I was really happy to see that success rate when we got those shots.”

RATHDRUM — It mattered.

Not just because of a border rivalry, but because — at least for now — the Trojans and Hawks are in the same (5A) classification in soccer.

Lakeland’s Luke Fritts scored in the 50th minute, but was answered in the 65th by Trojan Brady Navarette as the teams played to an Inland Empire League draw at Lakeland Sunrise Rotary Field.

“We came out really strong,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “Our conditioning is something we’re still working on, but the boys were scraping and fighting. Post Falls has some good players, especially Rylan Brandt. He’s a tough one to handle.”

Ethan Hunt scored in the 30th minute for Lakeland (0-2-1, 0-1-1 IEL), which travels to Lewiston on Thursday.

Brandt scored in the 33rd minute for Post Falls (0-2-1, 0-1-1 IEL), which travels to Lake City on Tuesday.
