ISP seeks troopers for District 1

COEUR d'ALENE — The Idaho State Police is accepting applications for commissioned trooper positions, including North Idaho's District 1. Successful candidates will receive a $2,000 signing bonus.

Applications will be accepted through Sept. 8. The next Idaho State Police Academy starts in January.

“ISP offers a unique and rewarding career for those committed to public service,” said Col. Bill Gardiner, ISP director. "We are looking for individuals who share our commitment to excellence and are ready to make a lasting impact on the safety and security of our state.”

Lt. Allen Ashby said ISP has openings in nearly every district across the state, including in District 1, where there are at least eight openings including two in Shoshone County, one in Benewah County and at least five in Coeur d’Alene.

The ISP has around 30 patrol positions allotted for District 1 not including its specialty positions such as its commercial vehicle safety specialists and domestic highway enforcement troopers.

According to the ISP website, a trooper's starting wage is $27.84 an hour, with an increase every three years. Ashby said wages are dependent on variables, including things such as the applicant having a two- or four-year degree, being a lateral transfer officer and taking on additional specialties after being on-boarded.

Ashby said the process from application submission to conditional offers is typically short, but the entire hiring process is lengthy. Successful applicants in the current hiring pool will be offered conditional employment pending background checks during the week of Sept. 15.

The current hiring pool will produce trooper recruits for an Advanced Training Academy in Meridian that will start in early January. These new troopers would be slated for field training with field training officers in mid-summer of 2025 in District 1 after ATC.

To be eligible, candidates must be citizens of the United States, have graduated from an accredited high school or GED equivalent, be at least 21 years old, possess or be able to obtain an Idaho license and complete background checks.

Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the ISP recruiting website to review the requirements and benefits and to submit an online application. The selection process includes a written examination, physical fitness test, oral interview, background investigation and comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations.

ISP will host several open houses statewide to provide opportunities to meet current troopers, ask questions and gain insight into a career with ISP.

“Our troopers are frontline defenders of Idaho’s communities, and we ensure they are equipped with the best training and resources available," Gardiner said. "Comprehensive preparation empowers them to handle the diverse challenges they face daily, from complex criminal investigations to ensuring highway safety."
