COEUR d’ALENE — A 22-acre beach known as the Rose Lake Informal Recreation Area has been closed due to high lead levels, the Idaho Panhandle National Forests announced Thursday.

The site is immediately southwest of the town of Rose Lake between the Highway 3 right-of-way and the Coeur d’Alene River.

"The closure is for the protection of public health and safety due to anomalously high levels of lead found across the area, in the soils, sand, and dust," a press release said.

Rehabilitation strategies are being assessed by the Forest Service and its partners, the release said.
