PREP SOCCER: Keepers shine as Lake City, Sandpoint girls draw

SANDPOINT — Both had their chances, but it was a clean sheet on both sides Saturday night at War Memorial Field.

Sandpoint senior goalkeeper Lilliana Brinkmeier had nine saves, including a save on a penalty kick 31 seconds into the game, and the reigning state 4A champion Bulldogs played to a 0-0 draw with the Lake City Timberwolves in the season opener for both schools.

Lake City junior Isabel Morrisette had six saves.

“I was really proud of our second half; I really thought we overwhelmed them defensively,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We only gave up a couple of through balls and a random couple of shots. But I really thought we controlled the middle of the field. We had possession for about 70% of the game, but the final 30 minutes, the hardest part of the game, we had good moments — but didn’t have the cleanest moments — that’s the difference. Sandpoint did a good job of settling in and cleaning up second opportunities after our missed first opportunities.”

“I’m happy with the result since we defended probably 30 of the last 40 minutes and it took us until the last 10 minutes, when the crowd started getting behind us, to actually start going at their goal,” first-year Sandpoint coach Alan Brinkmeier said. “Our midfield needs to get possession more. If we can’t get possession, we can’t link up and play out. It felt like we were on our heels for the majority of that game.”

Sandpoint travels to Post Falls on Monday.

Lake City hosts Lewiston on Tuesday.

First half — none. Second half — none.

Shots on goal — LC 9, Spt 6.

Saves — LC, Isabel Morisette 6; Spt, Lilliana Brinkmeier 9.

Cd’A Charter 9

St. Maries 0

ST. MARIES — Junior Reagan Meine recorded a hat trick, all in the second half, for the Panthers against the Lumberjacks in the season and Intermountain League opener for both schools at St. Maries High.

It was the Lumberjacks’ first game on their new field on the campus at St. Maries High.

“It was a strong showing with a lot of positives,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “It’s not a secret that we graduated a lot of talent last school year. We have some big shoes to fill and we have some players who are stepping into those shoes and getting their footing. I’m very happy with how the girls took instruction at halftime and implemented it, allowing our offense to really open up and finish opportunities in the second half.”

Junior Sofia Peppin had two goals for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which travels to Timberlake on Thursday.

St. Maries hosts Priest River on Wednesday.

First half — 1, Charter, Sofia Peppin (Mady Witherwax), 4:00. 2, Charter, Sierra Sheppard (Lydia Lehosit), 15:00. COEUR d’ALENE — Johnny Shotropa scored in the 67th minute to give the 6A Timberwolves a 2-0 lead, but the 5A Bulldogs rallied to tie the game in the 78th minute on a goal from Jack Treman for a draw at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“Lake City is one of the best teams in the state, regardless of classification,” Sandpoint coach Dan Anderson said. “I was quite confident, because we had a good gameplan going into it and I just really asked the boys to concentrate on that, win our 1-on-1 battles all over the field, and have confidence in ourselves and our teammates. They very much did that.”

Reese Crawford scored in the 47th minute for Lake City in coach Chaz Donovan’s first match after taking over for Kevin Jump.

Anderson, in his first match since replacing Tanner French after five seasons as coach, got six saves from Gavan Miles.
