PREP FOOTBALL: Lakeland runs over Bonners Ferry in opener

| August 25, 2024 1:10 AM

BONNERS FERRY — It’s a start.

But to get where the Lakeland Hawks want to go this year, the work will continue come Monday under third-year coach Mike Schroeder.

Lakeland, behind four touchdowns from senior running back Lovie Weil and a fumble return for a touchdown from junior Broxton Lukey, beat the Bonners Ferry Badgers 41-0 in the season opener for both schools at Kenny Mendenhall Stadium on Saturday.

“For the most part, we played well enough to get the shutout,” Schroeder said. “Our ground game was a little better, but the pace of the game was really slow. Defensively, we played great. We’re a little physically better than we were last year having some guys back. But we still have some things to work on.”

Lakeland travels to Lake City on Friday.

Bonners Ferry hosts Lincoln County of Eureka, Mont., next Friday.

ANACONDA, Mont. — An inexperienced Timberlake team going up against the defending state champion Diggers was not a good recipe for success for the Tigers on Saturday.

Timberlake was outgained 338-63 in total yards in the meet-you-halfway game at Anaconda High’s Mitchell Stadium.

“Our inexperience definitely showed," Timberlakd coach Kelly Amos said. "Overall, they’re a very disciplined, very physical football team. They were bigger, stronger, faster than us.”

“The one bright spot is, it’s August,” Amos said. “For this group, it's how much we grow as a team.”

Timberlake plays host to Grangeville on Friday.
