NIC golf coach Grove finishes tied for fourth in Northwest Open


DUPONT, Wash. — North Idaho College men’s and women’s golf coach Russell Grove finished tied for fourth with a 12-under 204 at the Northwest Open, which concluded on Wednesday at the Home Course.

Grove shot a 70 on Monday, then followed with back-to-back rounds of 67.

Brandon Drake of CdA National Reserve was tied for 14th at 7-under 204 (69-69-71).

Amateur Collin Hodgkinson of Oregon State won the tournament with an 18-under 67-65-66—198, beating defending champion Daniel Campbell of North Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Gonzaga opens the 2024 Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis against West Virginia Nov. 27, at 11:30 a.m. Pacific. 

The annual tournament is held on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

The Zags and Mountaineers sixth all-time meeting will be on either ESPN or ESPN2 and will be announced as the game gets closer. The other matchup in the top-half of the bracket is Louisville and Indiana. GU will face one of those teams on Nov. 28. The bottom half of the bracket includes Arizona, Oklahoma, Providence, and Davidson.

Gonzaga is 5-0 all-time against WVU. In the last meeting, then-ranked No. 1 GU rallied to an 87-82 over the No. 11 Mountaineers in the 2020 Jimmy V Classic in Indianapolis.

Gonzaga women’s basketball coach Lisa Fortier announced her team’s nonconference schedule for the upcoming 2024-25 season.The non-conference slate includes eight teams that finished in the top 100 in the NET last year and four of them made the NCAA Tournament. 

The first game in The Kennel will be on Nov. 1, for the lone exhibition game, against College of Idaho, as the Bulldogs are set to host five other non-conference games in McCarthey Athletic Center.After hosting the exhibition game, the Bulldogs welcome Montana on Tuesday, Nov. 5. 

The Zags defeated the Griz in Missoula last year, 83-70. Graduate student Tyler McCliment-Call, formerly of Post Falls and University High, and freshman Avery Waddington of Lake City are on the Griz roster.

Afterwards, GU travels to Stanford on Nov. 10. In their match up last year, GU defeated the Cardinal at home for its highest ranked win in program history, 96-78.The Zags return home to take on Cal on Nov. 14, followed by former Coeur d’Alene High star Madi Symons and Wyoming (Nov. 17) and Rice (Nov. 21). The Bulldogs faced all three teams last year and won all of them. 

This marks the second-straight year that GU has played Cal and Rice while they have faced the Cowgirls five-straight seasons now. Gonzaga will then travel to New Mexico to play the Lobos for the second-straight season on Nov. 24. Last year, GU defeated New Mexico in McCarthey, 67-56.

For the Thanksgiving tournament this year, the Bulldogs head to paradise to play three games in the Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam. 

The first game is versus Missouri State on Nov. 28, followed by Texas Tech and Florida State.
