Gonzalez, a rising junior at Coeur d’Alene High, was named MVP of the 18U girls division at the USAWP National Junior Olympics in Dallas, leading the North Idaho Water Polo team to the national championship. In the title game, Gonzalez had four goals, four steals and one assist in a win over the Viper Pigeon Pink of Houston. “She’s consistently our highest scorer and plays the set, which is the most difficult in water polo,” North Idaho Water Polo coach Mark Collingham said. “She often scores 4-plus goals per game, which is well above what most players score. Gianna is becoming a leader on the team and has two more years to grow.”
