KELLOGG — Kellogg High School graduate Shea Curran recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.

Curran, 23, was a standout scholar-athlete during her time at KHS where she was also in a leadership role in the school’s JROTC program. All of which, she said, played a part in her future success.

“I’m thankful I had the opportunity. It truly was a great experience,” Curran said.

Along with her commission in the United States Armed Forces, she also earned a bachelor of science degree and a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying her to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. Merchant Marine.

This year marked the 50th anniversary of women being allowed into the USMMA, making Curran's graduation even more special. Curran spent a year training as a cadet aboard an ocean-going vessel, which was only part of the rigorous program.

“I sailed on three commercial ships, traveling to Europe and Asia,” Curran said. “I had a regimental position my senior year.”

The U.S. Merchant Marines, while not technically a part of the military, are trained and managed by the United States Coast Guard. They are essential to handling and securing the country’s commerce during peacetime, but during times of conflict they move weapons and military supplies. As part of her service, Curran will serve as an ensign in the United States Coast Guard, stationed in Duluth, Minn.

Curran's nomination came from U.S. Sen. Jim Risch of Idaho.

Curran is quite humble when asked about her accomplishments. She credits others who have had an impact on her path.

“I am thankful for the people I have had around me,” Curran said. “I’m not sure I’d be where I am without their support.”
