William 'Bill' Joseph Van Slate, 87
William Joseph Van Slate, affectionately known as “The Silver Fox,” passed away July 25, 2024, in his hometown of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
He was born Nov. 29, 1936, to Hank and Ella (Gray) Van Slate in Gibbs, Idaho.
Bill was a lifelong resident of this community that he loved so much. Bill was a graduate of Coeur d’Alene High School, Class of 1955. Bill worked as a barber, a policeman and for Carnation and Kaiser. He retired after 32 years with Washington Water Power (Avista).
He married Elverna Goff in 1958. They had three children together: sons Rod (Michelle) Van Slate, Michael (Cindy) Van Slate and his daughter Patty Van Slate. Bill and Elverna later divorced. In 1980, he married Perk Hei and gained two more daughters, Cathy Johnson and Chrisie Hammer. They were together and married for 45 years at his time of passing.
Bill was an old car enthusiast and enjoyed going to local car shows with family and friends. He was a devoted Dad and enjoyed hunting with his boys and watching his kids play ball. Bill and Perk enjoyed traveling to Montana in their motorhome, getting the chance to see old friends and make new ones.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Mike Van Slate.
His memory will forever be held in the hearts of his surviving family. Bill leaves behind his wife, Perk, and his children, eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. To add to his latest legacy, Bo William was born to his grandson, Keith and Jo Van Slate, two days after he passed. Bill’s first great-great-grandchild will be born soon to Carson and Ariel. He is also survived by his sister, Cherie (Ron) Vaughn, brother Terry (Pam) Van Slate and many nieces and nephews.
