THE CHEAP SEATS with STEVE CAMERON: Do you have an opinion on something? Let's hear it!

| August 7, 2024 1:15 AM

We’re not having enough fun.

Seriously.

So many of our topics are grim, like whether or not Julio Rodriguez will be able to run again — and if he can prance around, will he hit?

We manage to find the depressing side of things: Will the Mariners have a four-game lead in the AL West with just a week to go … and let it slip?

Will the Seahawks and Kraken both suffer boring, average seasons, despite adding plenty of talent?

And then there’s the fate of Wazzu, scrapping along without a real conference.

At least not yet.

C’mon, sports are supposed to be a good time.

We don’t watch, become fans and get all involved just so we can develop headaches.

Do we?

Well, at least I don’t.

When I got the chance to do this for a living, my first thought was that I was going to enjoy it every day.

Yeah, there have been a few clunkers from time to time, but mostly I keep thanking Walt Disney for all my rides on Space Mountain.

Figuratively speaking.

So, I’ve got a plan for today.

This is the time of year when all our sports seem to crash together.

WHAT A hoot, with baseball careening toward the playoffs and the World Series.

College and pro football are getting ready to bang heads.

We’ve even got elite college hoops in the neighborhood, and on top of that, Gonzaga may slug it out with the nation’s very best this year.

Are you a hockey nut?

Congratulations, the Kraken spent $94 million on two big-time free agents — because it’s time to take a real shot at the Stanley Cup.

Look, I’m just babbling along today, which I do most days.

The idea is to mix those real, honest-to-goodness thrills of sports with some plain old laughs.

There’s plenty of room for both.

That brings me to our target.

I think there should be plenty of space for YOU to toss some stories on this page.

There are mountains of emails from readers in my files, and plenty of them would make great stuff for The Cheap Seats.

Let’s put this stuff together for real, eh?

I’m sure you’ve all got lots of things you’d love to throw into this space, but you just haven’t had the time.

So … go for it!

I want to publish one day’s column which just belongs to you.

Ramble on about your favorite player, or one you despise.

What about something crazy you saw at a game, or the darkness of an insane loss?

Are you a bettor?

If so, you surely have seen Scott Van Pelt’s “Bad Beats” on ESPN.

Maybe there will be a time for you and some pals to give fellow bettors a rash with beats of your own.

I’m going to cut this nonsense short today, because we’re all getting the point.

I want to hand this space over to our readers, so give me your best stuff.

If you read this column, you’re a sports fan — and that means you can tell tales for hours.

Here’s your chance, boys and girls.

You should know the drill by now, but just in case, the magic email is right below.

Steve Cameron’s “Cheap Seats” columns appear in The Press four times each week, normally Tuesday through Friday unless, you know, stuff happens.

Steve suggests you take his opinions in the spirit of a Jimmy Buffett song: “Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On.”
