UPDATE: Law enforcement looks for help identifying victim after fatal crash in Big Creek

BIG CREEK –– The Shoshone County Sheriff's Office reported a fatal crash here Thursday night, and they are seeking the public's help with identifying the subject.

The victim was reportedly a male, thought to be between the ages of 20 to 40, and weighed at least 145 pounds. The vehicle involved in the crash, which was engulfed in flames, was a full-sized pickup and was carrying either mining or construction equipment.

The truck was found near the intersection of Country Club and Highwater roads.

Shoshone County District No. 1 Fire Chief John Miller said when firefighters arrived at the scene, crews were able to contain the blaze to the immediate area of the crash site but nearby trees were already burning.

Firefighters know from prior vehicle fires that newer cars are usually made of aluminum with a melting point of about 1,220 degrees Fahrenheit.

"The frame is still there, but the doors have melted and vanished. We didn't know where the car doors were, initially, " Miller said.

The fire had affected the area in a radius of 25 feet around the truck.

"It had been burning and burning hot for some time. I know it's hot and dry, but it managed to reach high into the trees," Miller said.

Until the fire was put out, it wasn't known where the driver was.

"Everybody was trying to put out the fire to make the area safe to start looking for him, but that only took a few minutes," Miller said.

The vehicle has been tentatively identified by a part number from a piece that had been ejected from the vehicle.

Miller commended the interagency response to the crash.

Law enforcement officials are asking for assistance from the public about anyone that is missing or did not return home Thursday night.
