BASEBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — Seniors Trevor Rodda and Zeb Blattstein combined on a two-hit shutout as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings blanked the Bonners Ferry Badgers 6-0 on Monday on senior day at Ted Page Field.

Rodda, in his first year on varsity, struck out six in five innings, walked one and allowed two hits for Coeur d’Alene (12-7).

"Trevor gave us a great start,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “Trevor, he does what Trevor does — he just throws strikes, and mixes in the curveball and fastball to keep them off balance. Trevor has just been a program-type kid; great to see him have success on the mound.”

Blattstein pitched two hitless innings for the Vikings, striking out three and walking one.

“The difference is, Zeb is about 83, 85 (mph), and Trevor about 70, 72,” Karns said.

Another senior, Tavin Gardner, hadn’t played since his freshman year, following back problems from football. Normally the bullpen catcher, Gardner played first base and went 2 for 3.

“He also made a couple digs on ball in the infield,” Karns said. “Just another senior that does all the little things right. He does everything I ask him to do.”

Another senior, Zane Blattstein, made a great catch in left field, Karns said.

Sophomore Gavin Helms went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for Coeur d’Alene, which returns to action Saturday at Lewiston in an Inland Empire League doubleheader.

Junior Harrison Trunkey-Evans delivered a two-run double as part of a four-run first inning for the Vikings.

Bonners Ferry is 3-15.
