COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Marshall Tomlinson keyed a six-run first inning for Post Falls in the opener, delivering a three-run triple in the frame as the Trojans defeated the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 13-9 in the first game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader at Ted Page Field on Friday.

Coeur d'Alene won the second game 7-2.

Junior Brandon Morrison had four hits and four RBIs, including a two-run triple in the second inning for Post Falls, which finished with 17 hits in the first game. Austin DeBoer, who has signed with Washington State, struck out five in four innings in the opener.

“We were able to get the bats going early,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “All the way through the lineup, we’re hitting the ball great. We came out and did what we’ve been doing well and started fast in the opener. We just need to find a way to stretch that momentum into the second game, because it’s been a different story.”

“We just showed up a little flat in the first game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “Austin pitched a great game like he always does. We were able to fight back in the last four innings and took some momentum into the second game.”

Senior Chase Saunders had a two-run single in a five-run bottom of the seventh in the first game for Coeur d’Alene, which trailed 12-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

In the nightcap, Blake Foulk singled to score Nolan Christ with the go-ahead run in the fifth inning as the Vikings scored the final five runs to get a split.

“”We’re pleased with the way we finished the game today,” Karns said. “Kudos to Post Falls. They hit the snot out of the ball and play good baseball. To respond the way we did, I was proud of our boys.”

“We just had some bad breaks that didn’t go our way and it kind of got away from us,” Reese said. “We just need to replicate what we’ve been doing in the first game and put together a complete day.”

Post Falls (8-3, 5-3 IEL) travels to Lakeland for a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Coeur d’Alene (8-6, 6-4) hosts Lake City for a twinbill on Tuesday.
