Offense, defense big in WSU's first spring scrimmage

PULLMAN  —  Washington State Football held its first scrimmage of spring practice Saturday afternoon at Gesa Field.

The Cougars saw both sides of the ball produce big plays as the offense rushed for three scores and threw for another while the defense tallied four sacks and picked off three passes.

Quarterback John Mateer led the way unofficially going 16-of-21 for 194 yards including a 27-yard touchdown pass while Zevi Eckhaus unofficially went 10-of-20 for 121 yards.

Freshman running back Wayshawn Parker led the ground attack with 10 carries for 30 yards and a touchdown while redshirt-freshman running back Leo Pulalasi added seven carries for 25 yards. 

Redshirt-freshman Lane Heeringa and redshirt-junior Dylan Paine each scored on the ground.
A couple of newcomers led the way through the air as wideout Kris Hutson caught four passes for 66 yards and Parker added four catches for 19 yards. 

Fellow newcomer Anthony Freeman caught a 27-yard touchdown from Mateer while Josh Meredith, Kyle Williams and Billy Riviere III each made three catches.
Defensively, Khalil Laufau, Isaac Terrell, Andrew Edson and Tanner Moku each tallied sacks while Tyson Durant, Ethan O'Connor and Frank Cusano all picked off a pass.
Paine finished the opening drive with a three-yard touchdown run, a couple drives later Mateer dropped one in over the shoulder of Freeman from 27-yards out for the score. 

Parker and Heeringa later capped drives with short touchdown runs. 

Kicker Dean Janikowski connected on field goals of 27, 42, 35 and 36 yards throughout the day.
