PREP ROUNDUP: Henderson, Davenport help Coeur d'Alene sweep Lakeland

SOFTBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Ellie Henderson hit a grand slam in the sixth inning of the first game, and finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs and three runs scored, and the Coeur d’Alene Vikings went on to sweep the Lakeland Hawks 20-11 and 7-3 in the Inland Empire League opener for both teams Thursday at Larry Schwenke Field.

Freshman Jenna Davenport went 4 for 4 in the opener and drove in five runs for Coeur d’Alene (4-2). Freshman Molly Nelson was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored, junior Chloe Burke 3 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs, sophomore Morgan Knutson 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Senior Bailey Frank hit a grand slam in the fifth inning of the opener for Lakeland (1-4).

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lewiston on Tuesday in a doubleheader.

Lakeland is scheduled to return to action next Thursday at home vs. Moscow in a twinbill.

SPIRIT LAKE — The Tigers took advantage of 15 walks and a hit-by-pitch in the win over the visitors from Montana.

Marissa Needs had two of Timberlake’s four hits, including a double in an eight-run fifth inning.

Casey Whaley struck out nine for Timberlake (3-6), which plays host to Colville on Saturday in a doubleheader.

“Casey was great on the mound for us today,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “Even in the pouring rain she kept her composure and stayed in control. Overall the girls played within themselves and didn’t bail their pitchers out at the plate.”

Frenchtown is 1-2.

POTLATCH — The visiting Lumberjacks nearly notched their first victory of the season, but the Loggers (2-2) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 19-15 deficit.

Addilynn Turner was 2 for 4 with an RBI and four runs scored for St. Maries (0-9). Lexie Brebner was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Addyson Stewart was 2 for 5 with an RBI and three runs scored.

St. Maries travels to Kellogg on Saturday for a doubleheader.

SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Cooper Lenz hit a two-run double in a six-run bottom of the second inning for the Tigers, who defeated the Broncs in a nonleague game at Timberlake High.

The game was called in the middle of the third inning due to rain and poor field conditions.

“It started dumping and we were able to play through it for a while,” Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson said. “Thankfully, we were able to get some offense going pretty quickly in the game.”

Freshman Nate Beardsall had a two-run single in the third inning for Timberlake (6-4-1), which travels to Sandpoint for a doubleheader next Thursday.

Lakeland won both matches in mixed doubles.
