PREP ROUNDUP: Gugino, Kolden lead Lake City to softball sweep of Post Falls
• SOFTBALL
POST FALLS — Layla Gugino homered and drove in eight runs in the nightcap, as the Lake City Timberwolves swept the Post Falls Trojans 8-5 and 26-4 in Inland Empire League play Tuesday.
Gugino, who went 2 for 4 in the opener, hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and was 3 for 5 with three runs scored in the second game for Lake City (4-2, 2-0 IEL).
KaeLee Kolden went 4 for 5 in the second game for the T-Wolves, with a double, triple and homer, and drove in six runs and scored five.
Kendra Schiley was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and five runs in the nightcap for Lake City. Taylor Hill homered in both games.
Mariah Thomas was 5 for 7 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
“Our offense had an incredible day today — one through nine in our lineup had great at-bats” Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. “KaeLee and Layla were key RBI producers for us and swung the bat extremely well. Mariah and Taylor both had great days at the plate for us as well. Kylee (Palmer) and Maddy (Blood) were solid in the circle today. It was a great start to our league play.”
Lexie McCarroll drove in a pair of runs in the second game for Post Falls (1-6, 1-3).
On Saturday, Lake City plays host to Moscow in a doubleheader, and Post Falls is home vs. Lewiston in a twinbill.

SPIRIT LAKE — Freshman Abby Helmholz struck out eight and yielded three hits as the visiting Hawks (1-2) beat the Tigers in nonleague play.
Acacia Pecor struck out eight, walked none and allowed four hits for Timberlake (2-6).
“We had a tough day,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “Too many mental mistakes. Our offense was not on, and defensively we made some inopportune errors. We have a lot to work on. On the positive side, Acacia pitched a great game, and we were finally able to play on our home field.”
Timberlake is home vs. Frenchtown (Mont.) on Thursday. Lakeland returns to action next Monday at Coeur d’Alene in a doubleheader.
