Put your money on a duck

Rubber duckies will be dashing through Rathdrum Stream on Oct. 7.

The Rathdrum Chamber of Commerce is now selling ducks for the race, which is a fundraiser for the chamber's education program.

The race will start at 3 p.m. as part of the Rathdrum Oktoberfest in Rathdrum Park.

Anyone who buys 10 of the rubber ducks at $10 each is entitled to receive a duck-gram. Rathdrum Chamber administrative assistant Ariel Reed will don a giant duck suit to sing and dance for any 10-duck buyer.

“I’ll be doing a ducking pretty soon,” Reed said. “I’m just, just kind of waddling and dancing to the 'Sesame Street' rubber ducky song.”

The ducks will be dumped in the stream to race to the finish line. The winner will have a choice between a mystery grand prize valued at $1,000 or a cash prize of about half that value.

Proceeds from the duck sales will help fund scholarships or internships for students and help pay for a career fair for Lakeland School District’s upper-classmen in the spring.

“We’ve noticed there is a large gap between high school and knowing what you want to do," Ashley Cameron, chamber executive director, said. "So the chamber has put together a career fair for upper-classmen to bridge that gap. We are reaching out as many fingers as possible to try to network to these students.”

The goal is to raise at least $2,000 for the fair and to increase the cash prize. The more ducks people buy, the bigger the cash prize can be, Reed said.

People can order a duck or ask about a duck-gram by emailing Reed at office@rathdrumchamber.com. Ducks will also be available for sale the day of the race.
