Friday night lights in a small town
I like to do my part to ensure that the elusive “small town feel” reminders are a priority. There are few things more small town than bowling scores or the names of the high school homecoming king and queen on the pages of the local newspaper.
Here are the past weekend’s royalty: from Post Falls High School, King Morgan Baker and Queen Kinlee McLean, Lake City High School crowned Queen Madi Cook and King Mikey Hisghman and from Timberlake High School, Morgan Dickinson is homecoming queen and Vaughn Higgins is king.
You’ll need to check the sports pages for the bowling scores.
On Friday the 13th of October Coeur d’Alene High School will play Post Falls on the Viking Field for their homecoming game. Lakeland High School will take on Timberlake for their final home game of the season. I’ll be sure to give the king and queen from those schools a boldface, in-print shout-out, too!

If you’re reading this, you’re obviously a newspaper reader, so you know there’s an election coming up Nov. 7. That gives you five weeks to look at the candidates for a variety of positions in our communities. Every election, large or small, is important. Your vote counts now and always. If you’re not registered, now’s the time to do it!

There always has to be "the one." You know, the last one to leave a party or a meeting or what have you. The one who is awkwardly unaware that they’ve overstayed their welcome. While summer is officially over, “the one” in my world who just refuses to go back to wherever they came from is a fly. A single solitary and incredibly needy and annoying housefly. The fly seems to have taken quite a shine to me but I’m not flattered.
I believe my fly was voted off Fly Island or maybe it’s the ultimate "Survivor." All I know is that if it sticks around much longer, I’ll have to name it and set an extra place at the Thanksgiving table.

Like clockwork, I can feel my annual changing of the seasons cold coming on. Summer-to-fall and winter-to-spring transitions find me without the ability to fend off the bug. Probably because I’m preoccupied with whining about the end of summer or the long gray winter.
