PREP FOOTBALL: Timberlake rolls on emotional night for St. Maries

| September 23, 2023 1:15 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — On a night nobody knew what to expect, Timberlake defended its home turf.

Cooper Lenz ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns in the first half for the Tigers, who beat the St. Maries Lumberjacks 56-14 in a nonleague game at Van Tuinstra Memorial Stadium, the Lumberjacks first game since the passing of longtime coach Craig Tefft on Tuesday.

“Our whole coaching staff knew Craig and knew him for a long time,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “It was bittersweet when you lose a guy like that, but I think it was good for St. Maries to get a chance to play football and do what Craig would have wanted them to do. They played super hard and typical St. Maries football, when they probably had every excuse not to do that.”

Jacob Yetter had four catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns, also grabbing an interception for Timberlake (4-2),

“It was homecoming week, so you never know what you’re going to get,” Amos said. “Defensively, we just played really good, physical defense and made it tough on them to move the football. We gave our offense plenty of chances to get and move the ball tonight.”

Timberlake hosts Sugar-Salem next Friday.

St. Maries (1-4) hosts Bonners Ferry next Friday.

"Hats off to Clark Fork for controlling the clock and hitting on some big plays," Mullan-St. Regis coach Stetson Spooner said. "We scored early and bent without breakign on a lot of drives defensively. We had a couple of costly turnovers and coaching mistakes, but we're a team. Monday, we'll get back to work to constantly improve."

Chase Sanroman threw for 110 yards and a touchdown and ran for another 73 yards for Clark Fork (2-3, 2-3), which hosts Wallace on Oct. 13. Clark Fork was scheduled to play at Kootenai, but the Warriors canceled their season earlier this week, citing low numbers.
