Kilmer to share Race to Alaska story

| September 22, 2023 1:00 AM

Race to Alaska sailor and author David Kilmer will recount his 750-mile adventure Oct. 2 at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library.

Kilmer, Dogsmile Adventures team member, will share the thrill of the race, North America’s longest human- and wind-powered sailing contest at 7 p.m. at the library, 702 E. Front Ave.

Kilmer and a crew of three other sailors departed Townsend, Wash., in June, traversing open sea to Ketchikan, Alaska.

“Their home was a small craft with no engine, a good chance of capsizing and a slight chance of being eaten by bears,” said Holly Stetson, the Coeur d'Alene Public Library Foundation manager.

The crew sailed a Corsair F-27, a New Zealand-designed sailboat known for being relatively affordable with an aluminum and fiberglass hull, for endurance.

Donations of $20 will be accepted for admission to hear Kilmer recount the adventure and what the team learned from the demanding race.

Kilmer is the author of "A Peril to Myself and Others."
