PREP FOOTBALL: Vikings fail to get going at Woodinville

BOTHELL, Wash. — At the end of the night, consistency cost the Vikings.

Woodinville returned a fumbled snap by Coeur d'Alene for a touchdown late in the third quarter to put the game out of reach en route to a 28-16 victory at Pop Kenney Stadium on Thursday.

“We just didn’t play very good football tonight,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said. “We had too many self-inflicted penalties and that fumble for a touchdown. Woodinville’s a good team, but our kids didn’t panic and battled. But it just wasn’t a good football game on our end and they played a more physical game.”

Woodinville (4-0) opened the scoring on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Levi Grothen to Ryan Bowles. Everett Ratliff scored on a 79-yard pass to make it 14-3 early in the second quarter.

Coeur d’Alene junior Kolbe Coey scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 21-10 before halftime. Junior Kai Wheeler caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Caden Symons in the fourth quarter to make it 28-16.

Coeur d'Alene outgained Woodinville 390-276.

“We were a little sporadic and inconsistent offensively,” Amos said. “We’d have a good play, then a penalty or bad snap. When you’re playing teams like Woodinville, you just can’t do that.”

Coeur d’Alene (3-2) travels to Union in Vancouver, Wash., next Friday.

“At least our kids kept battling,” Amos said. “But we’ll need to watch this one carefully. We didn’t play polished football and couldn’t get anything going consistently. And we’ll need to address that.”

Woodinville junior quarterback Levi Grothen threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns.
