COEUR d’ALENE — Sometimes, all it takes is one.

Tuesday was that night for the Lake City boys.

Lake City junior forward Greyson Kortus scored in the 24th minute, the lone goal of the night as the Timberwolves clinched the top seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament, beating the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 1-0 in Inland Empire League play at Viking Field.

Lake City (9-0, 7-0 IEL) can earn the outright title with a win in Thursday’s home match against Post Falls.

“We haven’t had many competitive games this season, we were looking forward to playing Coeur d’Alene this evening,” Lake City coach Kevin Jump said. “There was a good crowd turnout for the game — and combining a nice crowd and good competition — our boys played well. I can’t compliment my defenders enough. Kai Delio, Ben Hannigan-Luther, Gavin Schoener and Brayden Ristic repeatedly shut down Coeur d’Alene counter attacks. To have two shutout wins over Coeur d’Alene is a testament to just how strong our defense is. We are blessed to have those four in our lineup each game.”

Coeur d’Alene is 7-2, 5-2.

“We went into this game knowing if we played our best, we could give ourselves an opportunity,” Coeur d’Alene coach Braden Ridgwell said. “Sadly, the goals didn’t come on our side. But I’m very happy with how we played. The turf played a factor and we thought they’d utilize their speed and our guys did a good job of anticipating that and stepped up in a big way.”

Coeur d’Alene hosts Post Falls on Saturday.

First half — 1, LC, Greyson Kortus (Jacob Molina), 24:00. Second half — none.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior midfielder Gabbie Henkle scored the game's only goal three minutes into the second half to lift the Timberwolves over the Vikings in an Inland Empire League match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“Gabbie did a good job of winning a ball in the midfield,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “She just hit a great, well-struck ball and it went over the head of the keeper. It was just a great shot from a spot we’d talked about.”

Lake City (4-5, 3-3 IEL) travels to Post Falls on Thursday.

RATHDRUM — The host Hawks had their chances, but came up empty in the Inland Empire League loss to the Bears at Sunrise Rotary Fields.

“We’re having a little trouble finding the back of the net,” Lakeland coach Kevin Rogge said. “They’re a tough, physical team. I’m happy with the way we played. They didn’t have amazing chances, but they were finding the back of the net, and that’s what we have to do.”

Lakeland (3-5-0, 1-5-0) plays host to Bonners Ferry today at 4:30 for senior day.

Ten days earlier, Moscow (6-2, 2-2) beat the Hawks 4-2 at home.

“It’s a tough loss, but I look back where we were three years ago, and we’re so much further ahead,” Rogge said. “We’re competing now.”

Bonners Ferry continues to improve and they’re fast and physical. They’re going to have a great program in the next couple of years.”
