Thirteen eye Cd'A library board seat
COEUR d'ALENE — Thirteen people have applied for an opening on the Coeur d'Alene Public Library board of trustees.
The list of candidates is Leslie Jerkins, Cathy Kraus, Melisa Bell, Melanie Chun, Michael Gridley, Kara Kral, Caryn Shepler, Pat Ryan, Judith Salzer, Ken Husby, Megan Dardis-Kunz, Cecil Kelley III and Lori Ann Wallin.
Mayor Jim Hammond will make a recommendation for the post, while the City Council will have final approval.
Fay Sweney, who has served on the Coeur d'Alene Public Library board of trustees since 1981, is not seeking reappointment and will be done Sept. 30.
Trustees serve five-year terms and are not paid.
The board establishes policies and rules for governing the library. Five trustees sit on the board.
Duties include adopting an annual library budget for review and approval by the city council; controlling the expenditures of money budgeted for the library; hiring, supervising and evaluating the library director; developing library policy and long-range plans; and exercising powers necessary for the orderly and efficient management of the library.
The Coeur d'Alene Public Library has avoided controversy over books that have received attention at the Community Library Network.
Current library trustees include Jim Windisch, chairman; Ann Smart, vice chair; Steve McCrea and Katie Sayler.
